Robby1870
The swap into a W-body is going to be 10x easier if the 5spd came from a W-body Robby

phantomFE3
so its easy to swap in a 5 spd from a wbody to a wbody, or is it just easIER? is it hard in the first place? how much does it cost?
Robby1870
It is some what easy to swap a five speed into a 88-93 W-body. 94+ Is going to be harder, because in pre 94 there is a spot for the clutch already there. In a pre 94 swap, you have make the clutch hole bigger, and drill a hole for the shifter linkage. Then basically the rest is puttin the tranny on, gettin the motor/trans in, the changhing wiring harnesses and ECM. When I say tranny, I mean the axles too, cuz those are def. needed Robby
midstar
My 96 still has the stock computer and wiring harness. I just had to do some wire jumping with the park/neutral switch plug. Has any one ever measured the intermediate shaft off another GM transmission that wasn't a W-body or was the W-body the only one to receive a intermediate shaft? midstar
My tranny came out of a 90 STE and it only has 2 mounting holes for the intermediate shaft at the end of the shaft where the half axle snaps on and 3 studs at the base of the tranny. I have seen a few J body trannys that had an intermediate shaft like mine but I didn't think to measure it. Other wise everything works great, except a heavy duty clutch is a must. Now I live with the smell of burnt clutch instead of tires. here is my incomplete website: http://www.geocities.com/gtp96_5speed/index.html

Guest TurboSedan
i've seen L-bodies in the salvage yards with the W-body style bolt-in intermediate shaft and also the slip-in type (and that trans still had 3 bolt holes drillled and tapped for the bolt-in intermediate shaft). from what i've seen, an L-body 282 will swap into a W-body no problem. i believe Jay's 5-speed TGP has a (broken) 282 from an L-body. you probably can't use the axles or intermediate shaft though. brianteel
the 5 speed swap is not hard but it is not easy. you have to pretty much remove the dash. other then that you just have to make the clutch hole bigger. I am also in the look out for another trans. i need to rebuild
