Hairdo12
Search Ebay for Freeze 12. Its still compatible with the R12 oil and its nice an cold. You need the Freeze 12 recharge kit as well. The 134a is not compatible with the R12 oil and you will kill your orings and the oils will destroy eachother then kill your compressor. The freeze 12 can be mixed with R12 but they won't tell you that. Take your air box out and you will see the two ports... high pressure and low pressure. I think the high pressure is left handed threaded so you dont accidentially connect a recharge kit to it. I used Freeze 12 for 3 years untill the hole in my condensor got so big I could no longer hold a charge. So if any one has one lying around and just want to give it to me.... I think the average price of clean R12 is about $200 for a 12oz can.
Mach 5
freon never should need to be charged unless you have a leak somewhere. You probably have R12 so you are going to have to buy the "for replacement R12" at a local auto parts store. Any place that sells Johnsons Products will have it. You may need R134 fittings so you can fill the system. Just remember to have the clutch on and engine running. To low of pressure will result in a clutch not working and you will have to jump it at the relay. As far as the leak goes, you are going to have to buy the replacement r12 w/ leak detector and put that in. This has a dye the will help you find the leak. The port is located on the right of your engine bay next to the air filter. Make sure you have the low pressure one- (the fill adapter will only fit on one) or the can will explode. I just did my AC a couple weeks ago and I had a leaky high pressure fitting so id check that first.
Mach 5
yeah thats what i used too. Johnsons Freeze 12... good stuff. Its colder than R134 to which is even better.
slick
You need to fill through the low pressure fitting.
Addicted To Boost
How many cans of Freeze 12 does it take to completely fill the system from dead empty? My car is a 1990 Turbo Grand Prix if that makes any difference.

1990lumina
There is a sticker on the drivers side strut tower saying how much refrigerant to use, and what type (though we already know that)...if I had my Lumina in town I'd go look for you. R Dubya
Nick I used 2 12 oz cans of DuPont refrigerant, but I have the connector tool to use those, otherwise you can buy larger cans with the hose attatched. I would say no more than 2 lbs, which is what, 32 oz?
Mach 5
2.25lbs so about 3 12oz cans
19Cutlass94
normally if you use 2 cans of freon and a can of pag oil thats good enough..
Addicted To Boost
So if I was to run Freeze 12 in my car, is there anything else I should add to the system, other than the 3 cans of Freeze 12? thanks

Mach 5
you don't necessarily need the oil, I have never used and I know people who never have but if you want thats your decision. By the way, the low side is the bottom one (the one thats angled toward the engine) is the low side. The high side is the one that is angled upwards. But thats on my 89. I don't know if they changed it for your year or not. Jarek
Addicted To Boost
On my TGP, there is a fitting on the left pointing toward the motor, and one to the right of that, which points upward. Which one do I fill? The upright one should be easy, but the left pointing one looks like its gonna suck to get to with the turbo and everything.... Mach 5
Its the left one. I actually had the fill hose go under my air filter to connect it. I was a pain. But for you being the turbo guy, I have no clue as to how much room you got. I could barely fit my hand in there. Jarek

slick
The filler fitting won't fit on the high side's fitting in your vehicle.
Mach 5
more freon will help. Id get 2 cans just in case. If you need a recharge, you have a leak because freon never goes bad. Jarek
Addicted To Boost
Ok I got my 3 cans of Freeze 12 today. I want to charge up the ac on my TGP.... I looked in my service manual, but I can't find the low side fitting in their diagrams anywhere?! The only fitting shown is the high side one... How do I go about charging my system? Thanks
slick
Should be right under the airbox.
Addicted To Boost
I'm talking about a 1990 Turbo Grand Prix- the Turbo is in the place of the na airbox.... I can't find the low side fitting anywhere...
slick
Ah... I'm not totally sure where it would be. I would follow the AC lines, your bound to find it.
GOT2B GM
Nick, I just recharged my TGP this week and swapped it to R134a. I had a leaking condensor, so I replaced it, as well as the accumulator (the new one has its own low side port as well) The factory low side fitting is in the same spot as other W's, between the battery tray and the turbo, facing the engine. It's tight, but not impossible to get to. Do it with the turbo cold unless you like getting burned.
