Car Whine when turning...PS pump?

Whenever i turn the wheel im hearing a whining sound and i cant figure out what it is. If im stopped and turn and hit the gas to move, the whine will become slightly higher pitched and then kind of fade away, but i still feel it on the steering wheel. Now prior to this starting (about a week ago) i always heard a little noise when i turned, just like the noise you hear when your low on power steering fluid, except my fluid level was fine. Could it be that my pump has just had it? The pump was idle for about a year when the motor was out of the car so i suppose that didnt help. Thanks for any help...

W-body pumps are junk, the other (Other than that obvious exhaust note) way to hear a w-body coming is the PS pump. A good portion of the cars whine, mine sounds like a turbo. :P I can't tell you how many times mine has run plumb out, and is still going strong, I am waiting to put in the HV pump when I get the money for the high ratio rack.

A cutlass I had looked at a year ago had a really really loud power steering squeel. The only way I was gonna get it was if they would lower the price for how much it would cost to get it fixed. They said no, and I said no.

It's really quite simple to do the pump and it's only like 50 dollors or so.

To replace the pump you will need a pulley puller. You can rent them from AutoZone.

1. Remove serpentine belt 18mm

2. Remove fluid from reservoir

3. Disconnect lines put them in a bag. You will need a 16mm and a flathead screwdriver.

4. Remove the pulley now

5. Remove the pump. (3) 13mm bolts

If you get a pump without reservoir take of the clips retaining it.

You will need a flathead screwdriver

If you have a power assist actuator.

To remove the actuator however you will need to first take off the reservoir

5. Put pump back on car and remove (using car as a vise)

6. Remove actuator

Put your old actuator on the new pump.

Put everything back together.

Reverse of teardown (duh)

Put the reservoir on make sure that the o-ring is in place other wise you will never bleed the system.

Bleeding procedure

1. Jack the car off the ground. So both front wheels are off the ground

2. Turn key on (don’t start)

3. Turn wheel to left and fill to (cold fill)

4. Wheel lock to lock up to or more than 40 times till there is no air bubbles maintain fluid level

5. Straighten out wheels lower.

6. Turn wheel left and right.

If there is noise check all connections again.

your down

I did it twice in a day first time darn autozone didn't give me o-rings and the pump was leaking at the reservoir

I have my power steering making noise before and dying the car when I turn the wheel in either direction when I'm pulling in or out of the driveway.

I just suck out the old power steering fluid to a low level and put a new fresh power steering fluid. I have not noticed any sound since and my car did not die when I turn the wheels in either direction when I'm pulling in or out of the driveway.

Mine used to whine pretty loud, and leak a small amount of fluid (that became a large amount when it was cold). I ended up replacing the PS pump seal, and that seemed to take care of it. No more whine from the PS pump when turning :D
