Broke parking brake...

Was playing with the project car (another 96 GP) and I set the parking brake to take the rear tires off. Drivers side locks fine, pass. side doesn't lock at all. I can see the spring compress and decompress when I set the brake on/off so the cable is fine, it's just like when the lever thing is moved nothing happens.

I know the caliper hasn't seized open since the brake rotor stays clean where the pad hits it.

Any ideas?

Does the piston move at all when you move the lever? If not, the screw may have come out of the threads, although the piston has to be quite far out of the bore for that to happen.

I doubt its the piston since you said brakes where clean. The pedal assembly works cause the drivers side is ok. Id would look at the cables. Both where it attaches to the caliper and where the two cables meet right before the drivers side tire. More than likely a cable broke, or its not attached to the caliper, slid off or soemthing

The cable moves, it compresses the little spring on the hard line and it moves the arm.

I think I may just swap my new calipers from my sedan over to the project car

  • 2 weeks later...

I thought this was about the parking brake pedal in the car, mine has went bad. I fixed the ratchet thingy (for a lack of better word) before , but it is messed up for sure now. I ordered a new one (they sell the whole assembly only) I went to the local dealer and told him what I needed and he looked it up and said I needed part#10238799 @ $55.95 so I ordered it from GMpartsDirect.com for $46.95. I spent 2-3 hours taking out the old one ... what a pain in the butt .... but it's out. I did notice that a few of the wires from the cable/connect nut were broken, so that's another project in the future when it breaks .... it's just too much trouble to remove it ....

also the paint on the hood is still cracking and is spreading across the hood ... this is a MONEY pit of a car .... :burnout:

BTW -- got a new job 4 months ago and working like a dog ever since .... :willynilly: but had my time cut this week , crap ....

Peace ... Mark

Yeah, that one long bolt towards the top of the assembly needs to be YANKED out after loosened. It will spin forever

PC Guy, I would look at the cables like Jay said
