Going to the track on Saturday...for the first time...

Just use the Michelins. Your car doesn't have enough power to lose traction off the line. Too bad I'm busy on Saturday, Rt.66 is only about an hour from me.

That depends on if the track is prepped or not. A lot of tracks have piss-poor prep on test & tune type events(if that's what it will be).

I would personally pull around the water box, get your wheels straight, now stomp the gas to spin the tires one full revolution(to clean off rocks and other debris you pick up before you make a run). Now pull up to stage. If you're unsure of how to stage, just park to begin with and watch a few cars run. Typically, doing a real "burnout" on street tires will not make any difference. The method I mentioned above works best for me on street tires.

BTW, what track will you be running at?

Route 66 Joliet Drag Strip.

I'll try that one-revolution spin just to clean off the tires, and I'll do it with the Michelin 17" tires.

Any other suggestions? How far do I go and how fast? At what point do I start slowing down?

how fast? Just punch it off the line and don't start slowing down until after you pass the finish line.

Rt.66 is a pretty well prepped track. They host a few different NHRA events.

Look down the track and you'll see where the finish line is, they're usually marked(the timing boards are usually right at the finish line). You will have plenty of room to keep going well past the finish line and safely stop and be able to turn down the "return" road.

Route 66 = Elevation: 635 feet. Not too bad. If the weather is good, you should be able to turn some decent times.

Turns out I'm not going to Route 66 this time. I'll probably go to the one in wisconsin, since either I misunderstood their schedule or Route 66 changed something just recently. I'll probably head down to the Great Lakes Drag Strip, up in Wisconsin about an hour and 15 from Chicago.

I'm hoping to get low-mid 15's on the quarter mile, but only time will tell. I should pull a 60' of less than 2.3 seconds, since I can do 2.35 with the subs and a heavy tennis bag in the back of my trunk (Passport/Escort T-Timer GT2).

Thanks for the tip guys. I'll probably be shallow staging the whole thing and brake throttling as well. I'll let you all know what my times are on both tracks.

What engine, and what all mods do you have?

EDIT: I see you have the 3800, Series I. Unless you have a good amount of work done, I wouldn't expect a low 15. Maybe a low 16 at best.

Custom K&N CAI, magnaflow muffler, res delete, NGK Iridium IX spark plugs, lowered suspension (would help reduce power absorption from launch and during shifts I'd imagine), and now about 100lb removed from the car from the stock weight. Basically, the car now weighs 3120 lbs. I'm planning to show up without a spare tire or anything in the trunk, and am also considering taking out the back seats just for the hell of it.

I just got an offer for an M62 supercharger (new bearings and coupler, throttle body, lower intake manifold, fuel rail, and injectors, all from a 95 bonneville ssei for about $300. I think I might end up supercharging this thing if I don't need to spend much more cash after that.

Either way, I'm hoping for low-mid 15's, so mid 15's would be nice. If I hit low 15's I'm throwing a party, lol.

The CAI is maybe good for 2-3, muffler does nothing without a full exhaust, same with the resonator delete. If anything, your gaining power back from your old, stock exhaust. Spark plugs will do nothing either. In fact, these stock ignition systems are good for about 500 hp. The power you felt after the plug change was the power lost from the old crappy plugs. Stiffer suspension will help, but not tremendously.

I'm still saying low 16.

One more thing. What would you guys suggest if i wanted to do my last engine mod for this engine...an Eaton M90 supercharger, or a 50 shot of nitrous?

Perhaps you're right. I personally felt a huge difference when I went from my stock muffler to the Magnaflow, and felt another huge difference when i took the resonator off. If I feel more power, I figure I'm pulling more than stock.

Yeah, you may be, but probably not much. The resonator is a bit restrictive, so you may have gained 2-3 there. The muffler, probably not a whole lot, unless it was completely collapsed on the inside.

I agree with slick, but it is possible to pull off *high 15's.* Like I said in that other thread, the fastest stock time known for a L27 powered W-body was a 15.8(great conditions & launch). Low-mid 16's are average. Just for what it's worth, my parent's '94 Regal Custom sedan w/ the L27 ran 16.747@81.93mph a few years ago when I ran it. That was on a horrible 2.446 60ft time. Temperature was right around 85* and it was humid. If I could have got a 2.0-2.1 60' time out of the car, it would have ran low 16's easily. I idled the car in the staging lanes and it was so heatsoaked that it felt slower than shit off-the-line. Here's the slip from that run.

Also, a guy on here that went by "Flyby736" ran a 16.095@84.14mph w/ a 2.263 60ft time in his '92 Regal coupe. He had a few small modifications done to the car, but I forget what those are now.

Nice tip. According to my g-timer, I ran a 2.2 second 60 foot on a normal day after a slight squeal on the tires. I figure that's pretty good. Usually I get 2.35 - 2.50. I suppose if I can get into the 15's then, I should consider myself lucky. We'll see what happens.

As far as power goes, I'm getting that Eaton M62 supercharger. I'll let you guys know how that progress goes as well.

Oh yeah, and as far as your heat issue goes, I've been having a similar issue with my car, so I decided to install a 4 hood louvers (vents) as previously mentioned. I'm getting them off a 95 lumina Z34. That should help me out a bit, and sucking in cold air from the outside has already helped me decrease engine temps. I'm also going to hotwire my fans together with a relay so I can toggle them on whenever I want to, which should also cool my engine down a bit for the track.

I'll start a thread when I finally get around to taking those pictures.

I'm with everyone else in saying the a burnout on street tires does nothing. I used to bracket race in my 95 cutlass coupe, best time was a 16.7 stock with a K&N.

When staging I let the car inch up to the line under it's own power until the first set (pre-stage) of yellow lights come on, then I stop and press the brake pedal down all the way, then I'll give it throttle until about 1500rpm, then I'll slowly ease off the brake until it starts to pull foreward enuff to trip the second set (full stage) of yellow lights. From there the lights come down, 3 yellow then green, as soon as I see the third yellow light up I punch it. Just don't forget to take your other foot off the brake at the same time. I would also recommend against manual shifting. The shift points in these cars are set up pretty damn good as is, I've just been told to never launch in 4th or OD cuz it supposedly is bad for the trans.
