92blackz34
the mechanic said my car seems to idle low when im stopped when i come to a light and stop it idles down to 500 rpm is there a way to adjust it?
1990lumina
The ECM controls idle speed I thought? There's a sticker under the hood that says idle speed is set at the factory and should not have to be adjusted...
digitaloutsider
What's the problem with it idling low? And yes, the ECM controls it.
rockfangd
thats perfect. 500 is ideal. my cutty used to idle at 350 perfect. Leave it
mediabandit
my '91 Z34 idles at 500rpm too, it's perfect. don't mess with it.
Psych0matt
i idle around 700. either way, if you adjust it manually, wont the ecm compensate, rendering that useless?
slick
There is an adjustment screw at the TB, but it's not recommended to mess with it. Any competant mechanic would know this. Anyways, 500 rpm idle is fine. Whats the problems that your having?
5speedz34
Don't mess with the idle screw; you can't adjust the idle without messing with the ECM. 500 is low IMO, a warmed up 3.4 should idle at about 750 or so.
slick
750 is what is recommended. But, if you can idle lower without it missing or causing any problems, you will save a good amount of gas.

slick
Alright, on your way down here tonight, set your cruise at around 75 mph(and see what your RPM is). On your way back, set your cruise at 250 rpm less than that. I betcha you see a difference in mpg. This holds true at low rpms as well. In all truthfulness, if you know your gonna be sitting at idle for more than 10-15 seconds, shut off your vehicle. You will waste more gas sitting there idling than restarting your vehicle. pwmin
when i did the 0/-13 on mine, i had to up the idle a little (up to about 1K) on the tb screw. otherwise, the oil pressure would drop and it would die. i think i may go to 0/-10 because of that and since i may need to put the 96 cams back in when i do the obd2 swap since i may need cams with the reluctor ring for the cam position sensor to run obd2
slick
Any reason why you chose the 96-97 cams? I've read that the 91-93 may actually be a bit more agressive, but the 96-97 are better for the upper end on the newer style intake. Have you tried the 6 and 6 timing? It almost refuses to idle on first startup, so I cranked that screw down a couple of turns. Also, the O2 sensor was bad, so after I replaced that, I loosened the screw some, so it idles lower when driving. It still pretty much refuses to idle on first startup though, I have to give it gas. pwmin
yeah, idk. i was under the impression that -13 didnt idle too bad, but if you went to -16, it started to get bad. i was told that 0/-13 was the way to go on a manual car. hopefully, i dont need the cams with the reluctor ring, but if i do, its going to -
5speedz34
Same motor, different car....95 CS....is idling at 1,000 too high? Start a new thread, don't hijack his. But to answer your question. Yes, if its warm if its cold then no.
