Simple Green, go full strength...I spray down with water, spray simple green everywhere and let it sit a bit...scrub, rinse off.

Simple Green FTW!! And to get those plastics looking nice and new, try some tire shine! I used to work in a sports store, in order to keep our black display bases looking new, we cleaned them with tire shine, worked great! I cleaned my engine bay yesterday, went from this:

To this (of course the few parts I painted)

I also used a bit of wax under there on the painted areas. It will look even better when I can get that cam cover off and painted.

Jamie, are you running without the hood liner?? Or it is off to clean underneath?

You can also get some Amor All Cleaner Wipes to clean the plastic pieces in your engine bay. Then get either tire shine(usually too greasy) or some sort of Armor All or Meguiars protectant wipes for afterwards.

Here's my half clean engine bay. Wax the painted parts too!

Simple green oxidizes aluminum I thought?

that's what I always thought. It did that to the plenum on my Lumina.

purple power also messes up aluminum. i use greased lightning. it cleans really good and doesnt seem to discolor anything or mess up Al

Just be sure to cover your fuse box, alternator, and coil packs when spraying down the engine with water. Once your all done cleaning, again let it sit, with the hood open(and the underhood light unplugged so you don't kill your battery!) for a few hours to let it all dry out.

I unplug the light because I shorted it out once and blew the bulb into a million pieces lol

I am running without the hood liner, have been for about 8 months now. It got coated in power steering fluid and was saging because of it, so I just ripped it off. It also had a considerable amount of mold on the top because the drip pans drain the water onto the top of the liner.

I have yet to have any issues without it.

FWIW... Simple green is safe on metals, Castrol Super Clean (the purple stuff) WILL eat aluminum, I tried, bye bye pop can

I've taken the hood liner off all of my cars, FWIW.

Yeah the age old myth about how it will melt your paint isn't true, I don't think.

It's there as a fire supresant I thought...doesn't that shit melt when burned?? Maybe not.

My RX-7 runs a lot hotter then you guys, and the hood is a lot closer to the motor too, and nothing is wrong with the paint..it's a myth - at least with today's paint.

It can act as a fire supresant, but only in really small fires that would probably extinguish themselves anyways. It never seems to help F150s when they light up. I've witnessed 3 F150s lighting up randomly sitting in parking lots, the cause is something to do with an electrical fault near the break booster.

If you think about it, whats going to melt first, the paint that was baked on at the factory, or the plastic hood louvers most of us have? lol

it doesn't help L67's either........ :leaving:

LMAO

i usually take them out, except it actually looked better with it in my riviera.

The only thing it suppresses is a little bit of sound(it's acoustical insulation according to every single thing I've read about it). I have the old insulation off my '93 still kicking around...I may just burn it to see what happens and/or start a small fire with some gasoline and drop it on top of it.

EDIT: Forgot to say that the hood liner has been removed from my '93 since around '04 or early '05. The only difference I've noticed is that if I leave the car parked outside at night and it gets cool, I can see the outline of the hood structure in the dew that forms on the hood. Back when it was on, the outline of the hood structure was never visible(it may be in colder climates though...it doesn't get that cold here).

You will have to let us know what happens with that little experiment, maybe even make a vid!

That reminds me, I still gotta take mine off on the Bonne sometimes. Really, I think they are ugly as sin.
