HankAaron89
i got a 1996 buick regal custom witha 3800 series 2 motor. usually when i drive for 15 minutes my engine will just give out on me and my battery and my oil lights come on. i lose power steering and only my brakes work. i usually just sit on the side of the road for a couple of minutes and then i juss start it up again. it always shuts off when im just driving. i dont do anything to it. my service engine light came on and then then next day i could not get the car to start at all. the engine has 160,000 miles on it. does anyone have any ideas or know of anything that could be the problem? thanks
slick
I would start by checking all of your electrical connections in the engine bay- at the battery, make sure your grounds are clean, and check your auxilary post nut. A lot of members seem to have problems with their Aux. Post nut coming loose, but I have owned several GM cars that have the EXACT same set up with no problem. It is worth checking though. DiscoStudd
Yep, I was going to suggest the Aux post nut. My Regal crapped out on me on the highway a few years ago and I discovered my Aux post nut was loose and the cable wasn't making contact. From that point on, I carried a spare ratchet with a 15mm deep-well socket attached specifically to tighten up the Aux post nut every time I gassed up the car. I put some threadlocker on the Aux post stud last summer, and it seems to have held up fairly well so far...

ZeroDCX
Samething happened to me in my 1992 Regal Custom 3800 Series I. It actually turned out to be my Crankshaft Position Sensor. As it got warm, it expanded and lost proper contact, which made my car instantaneously shut-off. After sitting there for a couple minutes, it cooled and contracted. The car started right back up, until the sensor expanded again and cut the car off. Might be something to look into ... Just a thought. Just a thought. that just might be what i need cuz thats the exact thing im going thru you MIGHT have a bad ICM(igntion control module), it would cause the same systems. test: next time it will not start/restart, check if you have spark. no spark most likely means the Crank Position Sensor or ICM. replace the CPS first, the sensors do wear out with age... then the ICM if the probelm continues. my own icm went bad while in virginia, I pulled the CPS, and it looked fubared. I replaced it but the car still stalled. Turns out the CPS was still working fine, and turned out to be the ICM instead.
