im pretty sure i used 80 grit to remove paint when i did my dads hood. takes off rust too.

when using a DA sander, dont lean it too much or you can gouge the metal.

Start off with 80 or rougher, then work your way up to about 1500-2000, with 50-100 grit intervals. Past 800, I would do it wetsand.

Oh, and inbetween sanding and paint, don't use rattlecan primer. Generally they don't work with most automotive paints.

In fact, the best primer to use is a 2 part urethane primer. It has a higher build, so when you spray it on it is much thicker than acrylic lacquer primers. It is also extremely flexable. It has a much longer drying time and you don't want to touch it because you won't get your finger back (it will be stuck there). Downside is that it isn't as easy to sand as acrylic lacquer primers due to it's flexability. A buddy of mine did his vette with this stuff. Once it was dry, it was like armor. Of course, the vette is already fiberglass, but he said on a steel car, it works well to prevent small dings from shopping carts and stuff.
