mediabandit
is there a gasket that needs to be replaced too after dropping the pan?or is it just the filter and the fluid fill?
19Cutlass94
personally, Id replace the tranny pan gasket. Unless your cheap and just clean it up and put it back on. but really you should replace it. Your right there and its not like youll break the bank on it. sl3196
is there a gasket that needs to be replaced too after dropping the pan?or is it just the filter and the fluid fill? Most should have a reusable gasket. Not sure on older w's but both my 96 cutty and 00 gtp have reusable gaskets.

Your right there and its not like youll break the bank on it. You can do that if you get a good quality one like the factory one. Some of those filter kits come with crappy cork gaskets, don't use those. I've never once had a leak reusing my trans pan gaskets.
mediabandit
cool,i will go get a new gasket and filter tomorrow,i wanted to clean out the tranny and was about to ask when i found this thread...how conveniant. so you all suggest just dropping the pan (replacing gasket, filter and fluid) and not doing a flush? correct? *post before i posted....so yes i will make sure i get a good gasket not a cardboard one
sl3196
Also I use brake clean to clean the pan. It works well and dries quick.
19Cutlass94
Ive always replaced the gasket. I dont trust gaskets to re-use them.

slick
The factory gasket is meant to be re-used. They are a rubber and metal gasket. The aftermarket, cork gaskets, are known to leak. Unless your factory gasket is bad, clean it and reuse it.

rockfangd
never flush just drop is what i always say. unless the car was perfectly maintained all its life it is best to drop the pan and change the filter. I love the fact that mine had the reusable gasket because aftermarket sucks
kuwaitliberation
The factory gasket is meant to be re-used. They are a rubber and metal gasket. The aftermarket, cork gaskets, are known to leak. Unless your factory gasket is bad, clean it and reuse it. Only problem with mine was that the rubber was no longer flexable at all. It was starting to crack from heat. When I got my new filter it came with a rubber gasket. I was just careful and tightened all 20 bolts sequentially to ensure that I didn't break the gasket. Works great. Oh and I love the much improved shifting. The "floaties" that you see in that pic are very normal. That magnet on the end is there just to collect those metal shavings. When I replaced mine, I changed my magnet out for a rare earth magnet which is a very strong magnet. It collects up all the shavings instead of letting some float around. The only problem I have ever had with that method is that it is very hard to clean the shavings off because they stick to it so good. Oh, and change that sucker out every 30,000 at a minimum to maintain the higher performance. It saves a lot in gas mileage, also as the TC is more efficient with clean, fast moving fluid (it gets slow with a dirty filter).
