DavidHowell3633 Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Great job! BTW, I removed the clear coat from Ford Ranger wheels using CRC Brake Kleen. Spray on - wait and wipe before it dries. Quote
meltboy1 Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 sorry for reviving an old thread, but this was linked to in a recent one about rim cleaning... My only question is, where do I get this aircraft stripper you were talking about Quote
j_mezz Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Great job and great information! I'll be trying this all on my wheels shortly. After the cleaning process I would think it would be wise to re-clearcoat them, any recomendations for a good clear coat? I've had trouble with some brands peeling up after a while, I think plasti-coat was the worst offender but can't remember for sure. Quote
89GranSport Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Wow, excellent job polishing! What a difference! Quote

meltboy1 Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 o ok, it's just something I have never heard of, I will check it out this weekend, thanx. Quote
j_mezz Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I would think any paint remover that doesn't harm aluminum would work...? Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Most airplanes are mainly aluminum so I'd assume "Aircraft Stripper" would be aluminum safe. Quote
ihateallmustangs Posted April 14, 2008 Author Report Posted April 14, 2008 Here is the stuff. I barely used a 1/4 of this stuff to do all 4 of my t/a rims. This stuff is the shit! I wouldn't bother with any other stuff. I got it at a autobody supply store. Quote

I've had trouble with some brands peeling up after a while, I think plasti-coat was the worst offender but can't remember for sure. I hate clear coat, which is why I went with polished aluminum. I put two coats of mothers polish and then a coating of turtle wax (green) to seal it up. Its been nearly a year with no problems. I can get these rims even shinyer depending on what grit I want to polish them down too. I was happy with the super fine steel wool (left a nice finish as you can see) Quote
AL Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 thanks for the info!! i will be doing this in the very near future... these need it bad... im thinking about repainting them the original gold tho Quote
Psych0matt Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 gold = meh. I'd do them either silver or gunmetal. I want to pick up a second set to do in either of those choices in the future Quote
AL Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 yah ive thought about those colors to... i dunno ill probably go the cheapest way since im only workin one day a week right now Quote
Scottster Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 I would consider doing this to my white sawblades, as they are a little scuzzy in some areas. My only concern is the black powdercoated sections of the inner-spoke holes. Without these areas black (and I've seen guys with everthing white) the wheels look really chintzy, almost like hubcaps. So if I could sand, prep and polish the aluminum lips, repaint the centers white...could I then have a powdercoat done over top of the white paint in the proper areas? Quote
GtipGary Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 I still want to do this to my five spokes but im too lazy and i can never find time... Quote
Scottster Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 So does anyone know about the powdercoating...can that be done OVERTOP of the painted surface? (see my post above) Quote
