Before and After Pictures of Rear Suspension Crossmember

while I have my entire rear suspension ripped apart anyways, I figured it would be a good time to pull out that old rear crossmember and sandblast / powder coat it, since it's been rotting away on the car for almost seventeen years. I was very impressed with the job that was done, and it was a very reasonable price ($80) for the place to blast it down and coat it.

After: I stripped down the jackpad and spring retainer plates with a wire brush and then simply painted them with tremclad. It wasn't really worth it to powdercoat these little parts.

I'll take more pictures once I get my BMR arms in and if I ever see my spring pad from FFP

Why not throw them out on PhotoBucket or something?

I have a 768k Speed up and 3 Meg down pipe so I feel your pain thats why I don't host ANYTHING myslelf.

Sorry not trying to thread jack

Decided on a trace route:

Tracing route to delorie.ca [24.71.10.191]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1

2 11 ms 13 ms 12 ms bras24-l0.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net [151.164.182.8]

3 9 ms 9 ms 8 ms dist1-vlan120.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net [151.164.162.66]

4 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 151.164.93.188

5 32 ms 33 ms 32 ms ex1-p2-0.eqchil.sbcglobal.net [151.164.42.149]

6 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms rt1ec-equinix.il.shawcable.net [206.223.119.20]

7 33 ms 33 ms 33 ms rc2ch-pos4-0-0.il.shawcable.net [66.163.65.13]

8 50 ms 50 ms 50 ms rc2nr-pos10-0-0.wp.shawcable.net [66.163.77.93]

9 67 ms 66 ms 67 ms rc1so-pos14-0-0.cg.shawcable.net [66.163.77.157]

10 76 ms 76 ms 75 ms rd2ht-ge4-1.ok.shawcable.net [66.163.77.133]

11 82 ms 81 ms 82 ms 24.71.10.1

Notice how it goes from sub 33ms to get to shawcable and 82 ms to get to the head-in router for his subnet? With that, it loads slower than a turtle stuck in shit!

I think that 7-8-9-10 hops are illinois to a 56K modem in winnepeg then to a 28.8 modem in calgary then to his hometown. Sure, you're getting 256KB up, but that doesn't count the hops in between.

Anyway, nice pics. I am glad that I don't get all that rust down here in Texas. Must be a nightmare for you guys up there.

It's certainly a challenge. An expensive challenge

If you're not lucky enough to have a covered garage, you're screwed.

Winters are the worst, because the climate here bounces just around freezing.

I'll come back and comment when I don't have to wait 5 minutes to see pics

Once it's cached, then you click and they come up. You only have to wait for it to download the first time.

looks good! Nice Lumina too. What's done to it?

As far as serious mods, not much. FFP torque struts and coilovers, an old POS RSM Racing warm intake. Just doin' my best to keep it looking good at 17 years and 285 000km old

hah! Well, I'm just starting to get to the point where I can do this. Four years of a shitty job and two years of college left me scraping by, so I guess I'm just kind of catching up. I stripped down and painted all the fasteners for the rear end yesterday. I've come to a conclusion about our climate up here; if it's not painted, it WILL rust all to hell. :frown:

BTW, I have to ask this... those metal 'braces' if you will, that go from lateral link to lateral link, underneath the monoleaf, did you break those bolts or no?

You mean the spring retainer brackets and the U-bolt type device that goes inside the crossmember? I stripped the hell out of them coming out, and the u-bolt is discontinued. Fortunately I've got the coilovers and don't necessarily need the retainer brackets anymore. I think I'll put them back in just because the one side of them provides a "bumper" for the lateral arm. I'll just use some "normal" nuts and bolts.

I broke 3 or the 4 bolts. Now I have no way of getting the broken part out. Atleast not that I know of right now. Since you took the whole deal out, how do those come out on top?

Inside the crossmember, the U-bolt is a plate type thing with a couple tangs that sort of "spring" inside the crossmember. I'll post pictures when I get home later.

very nice. so my wuestion is how difficult is it to remove those arms to change the bushings. I know it has the leaf spring in there also. IIRC.

Arg, I had this all typed out then crashed as I hit submit.

To get the arms off the crossmember, you have to do one of two things; drop the crossmember, or drop the fuel tank. Since I already had gotten rid of my monoleaf, it was WAY easier to just drop the crossmember - four bolts. I think you have to remove the monoleaf anyways to get at the inner bolts, and that is easiest accomplished by tearing the entire rear suspension apart (like I did).

Here's what my rear end looks like right now:

The upper U-nut inside the crossmember looks like this:

Aaaaand finally, here's my painted knuckle. Bloody difficult due to the irregular shape of the knuckle.

I PMed him a couple of days ago telling him that his sig pic takes me a second to load. Quite a pain in the ass to scroll down only to have the page catch up and reposition itself. I suggested that he put it on photobucket or something of the sort. You can see how far that got.

Thanks
