cecil-1
First off Hello new to the forum. My wife has a 93 cutlass with a 3.4. It fires up and runs fine first thing in the morning. But when she shuts it off and goes to get back in and start it back up it will not stay running. It fires up then dies out. If you keep your foot on the gas it will stay running. And if you drive it for a few minutes keeping your foot on the gas it will finally stay running on its own. She has noticed the check engine light will come on for a minute right before it will stay running on its own. I have checked the stored codes on the ecm and it comes up 33-map sensor, 44-lean exhaust,45-rich exhaust. All these say to check the wire connection at the ECM. I have checked the ecm and the connections seem ok. I tested the map sensor and it seems to function ok. Anyone have any ideas? I'm at my limit with it and about ready to just take it to a shop and have them charge me a fortune. Tim
Crazy K
I'll give you a box of pizza rolls to take it off your hand! j/k. seriously... my 93 3.1 CS vert has a similiar running issue, but without the check engine light. I have replaced the ecm, and the fuel injectors, but the porbelm was not fixed. I decided that I need to do a fuel pressure check, as I think the hard starting and even stalling is due to vapor lock. The info you got seems wrong... I would try another map sensor, used or new. it seems to me rich and lean codes are often caused by out of speck sensors. but I would do any typical tune-up stuff you may not have done as well.... I agree, chances are you are getting the rich and lean codes because of the map sensor that you are getting a code for. someting is probably wrong inside of it causing a false reading. I would replace that first and if it was still acting up them i would take it of a shop if you are at wits end.
cecil-1
Thanks for the fast replies. I checked the MAP sensor with a vom and it seemed to be working good(Between 1.5v and 5v). Tim
Dark Ride
You said that the check engine light comes on right before it will run on its own. My understanding is that if the ECM stores certain codes (33 would be one) that the ECM will default to the default fuel tables and run off those. You said you checked the Map, but that just doesn't seem right, the ECM won't store a code 33 unless the Map was giving it wierd readings. Maybe it only works sometimes. Crazy K
the voltage MAY be in range, but out of spec! meaning it is giving the pcm/ecm incorrect data that the car can barely run on. replace!
