stubby
Im new to the w-body forum. I bought a 1990 tste for 600 bucks that Im building. I have a body kit, Motegi racing rims exhaust and a cold air intake. Im not quite done with all the body work and I am going to paint it. I want to make this a mid to low 13 sec. car with more mods. I dont know if the the stock auto can handle that power or if I need to swich to a manual. :willynilly:Any help would be very much appreciated. Bake82
Depending on how much money you would want to spend, you can buiuld the auto to handle the power. Saying that, you would need to spend alot of money and pull the tranny anyways. why not get a good 5 speed tranny, and the spec clutch, and put in a manual if you like manual better anyways. TGP5sp90
someone posted awile back on TGPforums.com that it was possible to increase the performance on the 4T60 tranny (AKA 440 T4), however at the time I did my swap to a 5speed I personally check everywhere and could not find anything. so if you are interested in doing the manual get with me and I'll walk you through it. just check out some of my rebuild pictures Page 2 http://s138.photobucket.com/albums/q276/JimmyTGP/

Bake82
Thanks for the info the only problem is howdo you fool the computer into thinking that its out of park when its moving. would'nt the check engine lite come on. You would talk to TGPilot to have him burn you a performance chip for the 5 speed.
TGP5sp90
Actually that has nothing to do with it. All you need to do is connect the two wires that control the nuetral safety switch and that will allow your car to perform to the 5speed. However you will eventually need a chip made for any performance differences, and yes I do recommend TGPilot to be the one that you need to talk to. Now there will be some more stuff to be done, so get with me when you get to this point
stubby
Still have one more question before I go looking at trannys in the junk yard. I have cruise control how will the swap affect it or will it not matter.
Bake82
Don't worry about it. you can get it to work. If you do go the 5 speed route. MAKE SURE you get one from a w-body. It's the only Getrag 282 that will work in our cars.
Addicted To Boost
It's the only Getrag 282 that will work in our cars. A Getrag 284 will also work.

I was just saying the w-body 282 is the only 282 that will work in a w-body. Meaning j-body 282's won't work in our w's.

stubby
I got the body kit about a year ago they only make it for the 4 door 90-96 grand prix. I got it from Andys auto sport if you want to know. I dont have a digital camera or I would show you pictures. I m working on getting a camera. P.S. I contactred the local yard and they have a grand prix with a 5 speed he said 400 flat out for everthing fly wheel, shafts anything I need or 250 exchange for my auto for everything not to bad I think. Bake82
give them your auto and take it for 250. Just make sure it is in descent shape before you buy it! I'd go with the 5 spd and then with the Chip and you'll be good to go!
