Ongoing problem, 4T60 hunting at 40-50 mph, gears not working all the time

This problem has been occuring for several months on my '92 3.1/4t60 and I cannot fathom what could possibly be the cause. The engine has 105k miles on it and the transmission was rebuilt just over a year and a half ago.

When I first start my car, it shifts through all the gears just fine, into 3rd as low as 35 mph, then into 4th as low as 45 mph.

As I continue driving, I will notice it starts hunting between 2nd/3rd. I will be going say ~45 mph in 3rd, just when its about to shift into 4th it will downshift back into 2nd, and then from 2nd directly into 4th. It worries me somewhat that its acting so strangely.

As I continue driving furthermore, it will stop shifting into 3rd and 4th alltogether. Maybe once in a blue moon i will notice it shift but for the most part it just will not shift. Consequently I will be going 50 mph at 2,000 RPM.....60 mph at 2,500-ish RPM and it seems like such a waste of gas and friction.

What's causing this erratic behavior?

PS. I also notice my car seems to pull out of gear going around turns....but the ATF fluid doesn't seem to be low...should I add some anyway?

The afterthought you posted is normal 4T60 behavior. Some say you should top off the fluid some to prevent sloshing. I'm not sure.

I was going to say something about the TPS possibly being bad, but I think you've still got a vacuum controlled tranny. The detent cable might be bad, especially since you say the car just stops shifting into 3rd up. Or maybe your trans is just plain going bad.

detent cable is new i changed that myself...the trans is rebuilt it has hardly 20k on it. I haven't changed the fluid or filter yet since the rebuild but I think the time is coming soon maybe this summer i'll get around to it.

Did it have these symptoms before the detent cable was changed?

Honestly I can't remember it was like 8 months ago I changed the detent cable. Also This may not be transmission related but more engine related.....I noticed when flooring it, my car refuses to go any faster than ~95 mph...the engine just screams at 3500-4000 RPM and won't rev any higher no matter what and I get this uncomfortable burning smell coming from it....Is it knocking or out of tune or running lean or rich or something? That is also something that worries me

My car has those RPMs at those speeds. Maybe its diff b/c Florida is flat, but that sounds normal to me. Also, mine has pulled out of gears around turns for three years now. I just let off the gas real quick and it will catch. Hopefully that makes you feel a bit better

I know this is going to sound stupid, but have you checked the plugs/wires/ignition system? Sounds more like that than a trans problem. If you have a dead or limping cyl. then you will have unburnt gas which will burn up in the cat. That can make a funny smell sometimes.

As far as the tranny, I did put 1/2 liter over the top when I changed my fluid last night. I learned that a long time ago from the Hydra-Matic transmissions. It isn't just that trans, it is a lot of the GM trans.

if your fluid level is correct and the fluid is OK then I think you got a bad rebuild. you should not be slipping around turns, it should not be going thru gears at a contant speed, and should actually shift all the way upto OD. did u get any kinda of warranty with that rebuild? where did you have it done? take it back there and bitch.
