RobertISaar
this has been going on for a while but i decided to ignore it like any other red-blooded american: at idle(it almost always disappears at 55MPH cruise~1900RPM, i'm guessing the motor is just louder than the whining) i hear kind of a whining noise like a bad pulley and thought after i replaced the alternator(which had a bad whining/grinding noise) i probably had another component going out on me. then i think i read a few threads that said it might be LIM. i thought i'd try spraying brake cleaner around the gasket but, you know FWD, could only get around most of the front cylinders and some of the back. nothing there. i decided to seafoam the motor too since that hasnt been done in forever and i got a bit of white smoke coming up from behind the motor, might be the exhaust, heads i dont know it too cramped back there. any ideas what the hell it is this time? FordBoy
PS pump?
Brian P
check the transmission fluid level properly. That could cause the whining. What year is the motor?
RobertISaar
changed the filter and fluid for the tranny myself about 5,000 miles ago: no leaks and perfect level original motor for 1995 monte ls with 156,000 miles and counting replaced the water pump at about 30,000 and alternator just about 6,000 miles ago. wouldn't be surprised if the ps pump is the problem my brakes haven't given a lot of pressure back to my foot for a while, i don't know if they could be related, maybe its vaccum i dont really have any way to test for that. i did manage to blow both rear brake lines stopping to avoid a dog, and it locked them up(ABS hasn't worked since 1996). SigEpCutlass
My first thought was the alternator...as they have a tendency to whine regardless if they're working 100% or not. Many of our members have reported having such an issue. Are any of your pulleys connected to the acc. drive belt really rusted? Is your acc. belt tensioner properly adjusted & when was the last time you replaced the acc. belt itself? In regards to the LIM: unless you have a "milky white" gunky substance that has either started to form or has formed under the front valve cover/oil cap area, your LIM should be fine. I just tried finding a picture of it that I usually reference, but I wasn't able to find it. Let me know if I wasn't clear with this description. RobertISaar
i replaced the serpentine belt the same time as the alternator and battery. none of the pulley's seem rusted...except the outer rim on the alternator pulley is starting to rust already??? tensioner is working properly i took a 40" long piece of 1/4" steel tube and 2 foot of 5/16" fuel line and stuck it in the timing chain cover while the motor was idling: i really dont have anything to compare the noise with but it didnt sound good. i'm pretty sure its the original timing chain and 150,000+ is probably a bit too far. i'll try to record the sound with something, probably a cell phone
