Think I blew the front seal on my water pump... would coolant leaking out from the pulley be a good sign?

How does one go about changing it?

Do I need a gasket to change that? ie. pump to block gasket?

Yeah, I would say that coolant coming from the pulley is a good sign its messed up. Im pretty sure there is a gasket, never had mine off to tell, but I think there would be. When you get the pump it may come with it, or just ask the guys at the parts store if there is a gasket, they should know

new pumps come w/ a gasket, to remove the water pump, you have to remove the belt(you can inset a 3/8'' drive ratchet into the tensioner hole and move it enough to remove the serpentine belt by yourself, just make sure the ratchet is seated in the hole good to avoid cutting/crushing fingers ).. then you should have a few bolts to remove the actual pulley itself, it's best to have someone help you, I had a rubber handled tool(don't remember what I exactly used) and wedged it in between the water pump pulley and the one closest to it so the wp pulley wouldn't move when I removed the bolts. Oh yeah, water pumps are only about $25 or so from most auto parts stores

Thanks a million guys, but I just read those posts now that I'm all done.

25 bucks for a new one?? Even the refabs I was pricing out were 49 bucks then a 7 dollar core refund. the new ones were 60 bucks. CDN that is. I'm really really broke right now so I bought a used pump from the wrecker. Not sure if it was the smartest thing I could have done, but I did anyways.

Changing it was a piece of cake, save for the fact that the engine was burning hot! *yikes* :x to get the bolts off the pully, I just put a long thin bolt through one of the hole that I already took a bolt out of, and jamed it against the webbing on the pump itself... worked great.

20 bucks for pump

4.05 for a gasket

Knowing you can handle in a single night anything your car can throw at you... priceless.

You know that the used water pump will eventually die. Its seals may have a couple of days or a couple months left and no one knows.

Rebuilt is fine.

Brand new is better.

I know, I know...

But I had 25 dollars to last me until tomorrow (pay day) and seeing as I use my car for work, I kinda HAD to get it fixed today.

In other words, I couldn't pay someone Tuesday, for a hamburger on Monday.

What I mean by used water pump will die soon is its hours/life left.

With a rebuilt or brand new water pump, you know the seal will have a longer life and you can approximate when it might fail.

With a used water pump, you don't know when the seal is going to last.

Well.. each folks has their own priorities :)

My uncles water pump failed on his 2003 GMC Envoy @ 10,000 miles. You never know. Although, I think he bought a lemon. He just took it in for inspection and it failed. At 13,700 miles it needs a new tie rod and the rear brakes are SHOT. He's an older man and no means hard on vehicles at all! I'd be pissed.
