DRGrocho
So I changed my balljoint in the driveway of the place that I'm staying at yesterday. This was the first time it's been changed in 115k miles...I know this because it had rivets. Tools involved: Spare tire jack, general wrench and sockets that were in my trunk, and a Cordless drill. I bought a progressive drill bit (cone shaped, $25 at Sears) a masonry hammer (mini-sledge) and a chisel. I have to say, the masonry hammer and chisel combo were key...it took me a while but I did it. Anyway, while I was under there, I noticed that my half shaft moves quite a bit laterally, and it looks like the motion is allowed in the inner CV joint, so needless to say, I'll be heading back under the car as soon as I take it to a proper garage with proper tools. While I'm under there again I plan to replace at least the outter tie rod end. Are there any other things that should/could be replaced that aren't too much extra work while I'm under there? For reference, its a 99 Lumina LTZ
19Cutlass94
If nothing else is worn out I wouldnt worry about it. The CV shafts are suppose to have a little bit of lateral movment. Id say about 1/4" movement. You can do a visual check and just make sure nothing looks odd or anything like that, but if it drives fine, and steering/suspension is good, your kinda wasting your time looking for more things to do. DRGrocho
Everybody I've talked to says that the axle shaft isn't supposed to move at all...but I would say that it moves about 1/4". The boots look real good on them which is why it confuses me, but ok The boots on the tierod ends are a different story though, which is why I want to do them. Q-Ball
Been there and done that. Might as well do it all.
