Recharging Air Conditioning

Has anyone done this with the kits from Auto Zone? I desparately need to have this done and would rather pay 30 bucks, charge it and be able to detect the trouble spot of the leak later than to pay 80 and have it the same way it is now 2 months from now.

I want to know if it is relatively easy and if I need any special tools. I would also like any product or method suggestions.

The kit that Autozone sells is good. I've used it before with no problems at all. Very simple to to. IIRC, the line that you will use to refill the system is under the airbox.

If your system is empty, is it always because of a "leak" (one bad enough to need to replace), or does R134a just need recharged every so often?

Mine is empty, always has been since I had this car... I don't know if there is a large leak in it or it's just "in need" of a recharge, ya know?

if its just not as cool as normal, probably not a leak. sometimes u just need a shot. im guessing youve got no a/c at all. give some more details like when it started, how longs it been for, whats been done. first thing u can do is is turn on a/c look at the compressor n see if clutch is engaged, if not youve either got no or very low refrigerant or possibly something else. if its on get some guages on and u can go from there

edit: i somehow overlooked "mine is empty". ya thatd be a leak

freon never needs to be recharged. If anything it will need to be "replaced" due to leaking. It also should never need to be changed.

My A/C hasn't worked since I got the car back in November.

lol i shot about 3 bottles into my 94 cutty and went through 2 compressors and i never got 1 brush of cold air. Besides i hated the noise that the plate on the compressor made anyhow. I just got a bypass pulley and said the hell with it

See, you gotta talk to a guy from Texas. A/C is an absolute requirement.

Doesn't the 93 have the R-12 system and not the R-134a? If it does have R-12, you can't touch it. Do not put anything in the system from autozone becuase none of it is for R-12. My 93 Cutty Sup has R-12. There is a sticker on the drivers strut mount under the hood that says "caution blah, blah, blah r-12..."

R-12 systems are required to be done by a pro. You have two choices. First, take all the lines out, flush them, the condensor, the compressor and the A/C radiator with soap and water to wash everything out as best you can. Get new O-rings and replace every one. Use 3-in-1 oil or similar to oil the rings before carefully putting everything back together. Make sure you have replaced everything that is nylon/rubber to ensure NO LEAKS. Then get the R-12 to R-134a upgrade kit. It will have the fittings to take the high and low pressure side valves to R-134a. After that, attach an A/C vacuum and draw a vacuum on it to remove all water. Water boils off at room temperature with a vacumme on it, so the steam just gets sucked out. If you evacuate the system for an hour, you will more than have it. After that, immediately attach the R-134a oil charge and start the vehicle. Turn the compressor on (if it doesn't come on automatically, you will need to run a jumper to the compressor to get it to come on and stay on during the fill process). Once the oil is in, then start with the R-134a charge. Make sure you get all of this from the vacuum to the end done as quickly as possible. If you waste any time, you risk getting water in the system. One drop of water will kill the entire system, if it hits it in just the right spot. It usually takes a little more water than just a drop, but a drop can do it.

Well, I hope I haven't bored you to tears with this. Good luck!
