chadz34
Well, the Lumina is coming along, it now has FULL exhuast, since the mufflers were fucked, it has Magnaflow Camaro Z28 tips, and the parts are being put on soon as the snow clears up. Now, I had a question sicne I wanted more horse.....can the +6 and -6 cam timing be used to benefit me fore more top end? I have a WAI and exhuast to support the mod. I also need a full blown pic of the 96 DOHC vacuum line routing, since I am having all lines re-done I am sick of pissing around with minor leaks, I mean the car is 11 years old it's gotta have shitloads of minor leaks, so I am going to re-do ALL lines. ANy input?
pwmin
i'm going to try it. going to start tearing it apart this weekend and order the parts on monday.
Psych0matt
I would do a real CAI first, but either way I would think the 6* mod would help you. I want to do it eventually, but since I paid to have it all timed correctly, I'll wait a while
RJansen658
Yes I think it would benefit you, but more importantly, you should buy the adjustable cam gears... that way, you can put it all together, and be able to play with the timing later. i believe they even make some that can be adjusted with the cover on. Psych0matt
do they actually have them for the 3.4? If they do, I'd be really interested in getting some!
RJansen658
They 100% definatley do. I have seen them multiple times while browsing the web. I have seen billet alluminum, and anodized sets.
Psych0matt
hmmm, I'll have to look for dat
White93z34
first be able to time a 3.4 back to 0 degree. and do it well. then start messing with cam timing mods.
RJansen658
Yea, the 3.4L is one of the hardest timing belts there are. Up there with the northstars chain. The ford 3.0 24valve engines are real bad too.
Psych0matt
I timed it fine (with the marks) every time until I had 94 cams/96 block. The marks were different or something. I agree though, I need to learn how to do it right and well, but I wouldn't mind learning, I just wish I had another engine on a stand or something I could play with I still wouldnt mind locating a set of these though, if anything just to price them
White93z34
you think so? i didn't find mine overly hard to do, lots of things that you cannot forget to do, and a weird setup to say the least. but i don't think it is a terribly difficult job. just have to pay attention to detail. RJansen658
You must've had the tool to hold the cams, I think every time I've done a 3.4L it was somewhere other than my shop. I mean, perhaps its my general dislike for the 3.4L.... but I don't understand why anyone would want to make an engine SSSOOOOO much more complicated, with so many more intricate valvetrain parts, tolerances, and such a PITA to work on.... all for such a minimal (in the long run) power increase... when all they had to do was bolt a supercharger on an engine they already had.... No disrespect to the LQ1 crowd...
Psych0matt
i dont/didnt have the hold down tools, but i had the factory timing marks still. I had to pay to have it done last summer after my engine swap, since I had the 94 cams on a 96 block, it was slightly different because of the difference in gear tooth shape or something like that ig uess
White93z34
yes, i have the full kent-moore timing belt service tool set. i would never dream of doing that job without it. i'll agree with you, it is overly complex in its setup (timing chain and belt WTF?), however lets remember that this IS the first American made DOHC v6 to the market. Psych0matt
[me=Psych0matt]should seriously think about picking up a timing tool set[/me]
5speedz34
[me=Psych0matt]should seriously think about picking up a timing tool set[/me] They are hard to find, and expensive. Kent-Moore doesn't make them anymore.
RJansen658
There are a few different general types that will work for the 3.4, I think you can even use that cheap plastic one. Another good trick, is once you get it over 2 cams, use hose pinching pliers, or brakes hose clamps to hold it to the gears, then do the next head. chadz34
So, let's say I do this mod, It won't sound like GP1138's new Z34 will it? Like that is not even worth doing if it sounds that bad hahaha. What kind of horsepower and torque are we looking at as far as increase? I will get pics up of my new exhuast too once the shitty weather clears up, I tihnk you guys will like it. It's also being ran at the track this year. joey b
the 6* mod works very well on the 96+ engine. I'd hope you know what you are doing before you attempt it though. BTW, whats wrong with the ones that they tell you how to make over on 60*V6? Those have always worked just fine for me.
