chevy94ss
hey guys, im new here and i have a few ?'s. my mom has a 92 grand prix se w/ the 3.4 and it idles wayyy high when cold at about 3000 rpms. when the engine gets to operating temp it idles at about 1100-1200. the SES light was on but i scanned it and i pulled codes for the TPS, MAP, and another that was saying the the idle was 200 rpm above normal. i replaced the TPS and MAP sensors and did the idle relearn and problem is still there. I think it might be a vacuum (sp?) leak and i was thinking that it might be the lower intake gasket. ive tried to inspect all the vacuum (sp?) lines but there is not a whole lot of room to see everything. if it is the intake gasket what is the easiest method of doing this? any info is GREATLY appreciated. slick
Intake gaskets are insanely easy to do on the 3.4 DOHC. If you have any wrenching experience, it should take you less than 2 hours to do. The vacuum lines are known to be a bit troublesome on these cars, especially since they are hard plastic, and probably old, cracked, and brittle. You will find a vacuum T near the battery and overflow tank. From there on, you should be able to follow the vacuum lines decently to check them. With the car on, spray the vacuum lines with carb or throttle body cleaner and listen for any idle fluctuation. You can check the intake gaskets with the same method. BTW, my dad has a 95 Impala SS as well. And, welcome aboard.
