hi all,

sorry if this has already been asked.

I've read the section to the mysterious oil leak on the w-body page. And I'm still unsure if this is the problem with the 97 Cutlass Supreme, Vin M, 3100.

We did the LIM gaskets last year so that shouldn't be a problem. I thought I read somewhere that there are new valve covers, or seals, that are better than the current ones..

The problem is when I go for a regular run, street, or even a bit harder that after I stop and get out of the car and walk around the engine bay I can smell oil burning (or burnt oil). I've looked under the hood, and can't pinpoint anything on the engine. As for any leaks on the ground. I haven't really found any yet...

I recall last year driving around and stopping, letting the car idle, then the radiator fan kicks it, and I could smell some burning oil (with the windows open). My assumption is that it might be leaking from somewhere but has a chance to "burn" on the engine. (i could be wrong). I know it's losing around a 1/4 every every couple of months.(Seems like it for now).

I'll try again in the summer to have a better look. It's just that I've checked several times and can't pinpoint anything.

Any ideas? or experience?

Thanks,

Raj

Also check the oil pump drive seal o-ring. That will get a puddle of oil and will leak.

Yep, my 3.1 leaked a tad bit of oil from there, although it wasn't anything noticeable from the dipstick or puddles on the ground.

I'm pretty sure its the alloy type valve covers.

Strange enough I believed to have seen spots on the ground from the passenger side of the engine (where all the pulleys are). I think its moist on the passenger side of the engine but I could be wrong, we had to change the water pump a couple of months ago and I haven't got the chance to clean any residue yet.

I'll try to have a proper look this upcoming weekend... currently at school so its a bit tough.

But next time I go for a run and come back I'll look more on the driver's side, for now I've neglected to check there...

By the way I've tried looking in the haynes manual and I can't seem to find the procedure mention on the w-body site.. it says just removal of the oil pump, by taking off the oil pan. etc....

thanks for all the help!

no no your thinking of the wron thing. The oil pump drive seal o-ring is right next to the LIM on the drivers side. Theres a bolt that hold a bracket down which in return holds that down. Look under your TB and youll see it down there. If its been leaking long enough Im willing to get the top of your tranny will be wet with oil....

I had a look today, I didn't drive the car yet, and it just seems a bit dirty under the TB. It doesn't look moist or anything like that (or recent). I'll try by this weekend to give it a run and then check it.

Thats kind of funny because when i switched to cold air intake, and changed the tranny vacumn modulator i saw a lot of oily residue on the tranny that i had to clean off, and for the last few years i have lost about a quart a month. Mine is a 94 cutty 3100 v6. Is this the same procedure. and so from the pics is it right under the TB basically? i cant find decent pics except 1.

I asked my bro yesterday and he told me that they changed the seal recently....

Once the weather here in Mtl gets better, my bro and I will will try to clean the engine a bit and try to isolate it....

thanks to all again...
