Justin Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 And that's how you kill a 2.8, powershifting on gravel. Snapped timing chain. The car is way too much fun to not fix, plus I've got plenty of 2.8s and 3.1s laying around. Quote
Bake82 Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Shitty deal. But with 186000 miles might be good to have a lower milage 2.8 in there anyways! Quote
Justin Posted March 20, 2007 Author Report Posted March 20, 2007 The 2.8 I'm dropping in there only has about 150,000 on it, but all new top end gaskets. As for the clutch, I think I'll let her buck, I put it in new when I got the car, I suppose it's maybe got 20,000 on it. The interesting thing is that when I got the flywheel off the motor, the metal plate on the back of the cam had been leaking oil pretty decently, that kind of surprised me. I never had to add oil to the car, but it's always leaked. I'll be sealing it up on the new(er) motor before installation, should be one of the cleanest '89 CS engine bays around. Quote
BXX Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Because 3.1L's like to eat rod and main bearings... Quote
Justin Posted March 20, 2007 Author Report Posted March 20, 2007 The main reason is it's still winter up here and all my 3.1s are in cars that I can't get to. Plus I heard once the 3.1 took a different flywheel, not sure if that's true. Also, I don't have any 3.1s that I know are as good as this 2.8. The 10-15 hp really makes no difference to me. Quote

BXX Posted March 20, 2007 Report Posted March 20, 2007 Yeah, they are also smoother... The rod/stroke ratio of a 2.8L would allow it to safely rev beyond 9000rpm with good components and valvetrain mods... The 3.1L have a bigger stroke and shorter rod that isn't very friendly to revs and adds much more strain on the cylinder walls and bearings... Damn side-loading forces Quote

I still want a 2.8 5speed car for shits and giggles. Quote

BXX Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Yes, we need to have 2.8L 5-speed races... Or even better, have a 2.8L 5-speed COTM!! BTW, I have poly torque strut bushings, mine is better Quote

Big difference between the auto and the 5-speed, more so than most cars Quote
88Regal Limited Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 We should get all the 2.8's on a strip to see which 2.8 is the fastest! I'd be in! Quote
