Addicted2bass
Ok this is going to be kind of a long post so bear with me. My car is a 1996 Grand prix with the 3100, 123k miles. Some of you have prolly read my posts about the rpms jumping and not being able to connect with the computer through obd II, but now i have some new problems on top of those. First off my idle is way out of wack. Ive owned the car for a year and it always idles at 800-900rpm. But now its been anywhere from 1000-3000. It wont go down untill i turn the car off and restart it, then it usually goes down to around 1000rpm. Secondly. Usually the way i drive my car shifts around 2500rpm, 3000 if im gettin on it more. Today it would sometimes go to past 3000 and not shift until i let off the gas a little, this was from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Basically the shifts just didnt feel right or normal. Third. There is a whining noise coming from my engine, it sound like its coming from the serp belt area but i could be wrong. It may be my a/c compressor acting up again, but i dont think so. The noise is not there all the time and seems to rise and fall with the rpms somewhat. This is all on top of my rpm jumping problem, which has not gone away. it also seems like the rpms are jumping at lower speeds now to, but only 100 or less so its not very noticible. Im not the most mechanically inclined person, i can do simple part swaps thats about it. For everything else i take the car to my mechanic, who im going to see tomorrow. Hes prolly gettin sick of seeing me at this point!! I really think there is one problem causing all these things but i dont have a clue what it is. If i can isolate the problem ill get it fixed, if not i might just try to sell the car cuz its becoming a headache!! Also, all this started happening 2 days after i got my gas tank replaced. I doubt that has anything to do with it but i figured id mention it. Sorry for the long post.
rockfangd
TCC acting up maybe. power steering pump could be making some noise. Try tapping the ecm with it running. Spray TB cleaner around gaskets and hoses to check for vacumn leaks. i know how you feel after what my cutty has put me through the last week.Read my posts and they may be of some help to you also
SigEpCutlass
You sir have a 90%+ chance of having an alternator on its way out IMHO.... If the noise you are hearing is coming from the acc. belt area, then you should do the following: Drive your car to your local part store that does free tests on alternators. Pull the alt and get it tested ASAP. While you're at it: 1. Check the belt for cracks and possible tears about to happen (if you don't know what I mean, I'm sure someone can find a pic somewhere on the internet) 2. Check that the belt tensioner is operating correctly and is keeping the belt as taunt as it should be. The tensioner our cars got was crap, so they tend to break. IIRC, if the tensioner is not working properly and keeping the belt taunt, your car will run hotter & the idle speed will be affected. In regards to your complaint about the shift RPM, make sure your accelerator cables are properly adjusted on the tb, and not sticking. Addicted2bass
The TCC is one of main suspects. The only strange thing is; when i manually lock the torque converter (by tapping the brake while its unlocked) the car will always jump up the exact same rpm amount (around 400 i think) whereas when my rpms randomly jump they are all over the map. I have a brand new (not rebuilt) alt from napa. Its like 3 months old, but it could be defective. Last time i checked my belt it looked good. The tensioner is not original, but i dont know how long ago it was replaced, it looks fairly new. Should i clean my throttle body out? A friends of mine told me that when you take the tb off and clean it, it will probably cause a chain reaction and i will end up needing to get my injectors cleaned or get new ones. I'm not sure what to tell you about the TCC. Sorry. Regardless of how old the alt is, take it back there to be checked. You don't want it to crap out and leave you stranded somewhere! I forgot to mention that if you have an OEM tensioner there are markings on it to determine if it is taunt enough. It's kind of a stay between the lines type of operation. I've never heard that before...ever. If you only use the appropriate amount of TB cleaner, you shouldn't have any issues anyway.
