servoalt
yeah, my 96 engine in my 95 cutlass has a slight misfire and hesitation to it. It's been doing this since i put it in but figured it would go away with some injector cleaner and time. however, it hasnt and i really want to get it fixed. here are the symptoms: 1. shaky idle - stumbles, shakes a bit, and you can hear it in the exhaust (pa poom, pa poom) 2. detonation in exhaust - upon acceleration, you can hear pinging in the exhaust like unburned fuel is being dumped in and exploding 3. surging - at constant throttle the car surges anyone have similar issues and solution? so far i have found it could be injectors, vacuum leak, a combination of sensors, burned valve, bad coil, icm, or ... ? 89GP_SE
first off check the plugs and wires. I just had to replace mine and I had the same symptoms

servoalt
Oh yeah, I also forgot to say that it has brand new plugs and newer wires on it, new egr gasket, and upper intake gasket. It is not throwing any codes. It seems as if the miss is worst when the engine is under load. When cruising at 60 in OD, it shudders ... bad. The wierdest thing about this is that the 95 engine would pull like a son-of-a-bitch, but this one doesn't, and I swapped over almost all the stuff from the old engine. Crank sensor, cam sensor, and oil pressure sender weren't swapped. Everything else was. I'll throw on some AC Delco plugs and get it checked on a Snap-On MODIS today. I'm fearing injectors or ICM. Mach 5
I don't know if your egr has one of those bleed filters on it but if it does, replace it as a clogged filter could cause these symptoms.
slick
I had similar issues with my old 3.4. A new set of coil packs and ICM while I was at it fixed it right up. If I were you, hit a JY and pick them up for cheap so you can be sure to rule them out.
servoalt
LOL I have about 12 coils in the garage and 4 ICMs ... don't ask I'll bring them along when I get the car scanned. I'll update later. THX
Brian P
re-check the wires, especially if they've been pulled off before. My mom's '95 Olds had similar symptoms, along with major misfire under heavy load, and the problem was 2 wires arcing at the ignition coil. servoalt
i hooked up a snap-on MODIS to find out the coils and icm are slowly going, the firing order was off, and i consequently had a fouled plug. boy am i lucky to know the michigan rep for snap-on. hes a damn good guy. not only did he let me use his scan tool but he showed me how to use it and gave me a crash refresher course in oscilliscope reading. got my rims/new tires (245/45-17s) on too. ill post pics tomorrow. lata
