phantomFE3
hello, i was sitting in my car the other day listening to the stereo and fooling around with the turn signals and crap and my car has cruise control, and it wa sin park, and i flipped the little cruise switch to accelerate and my dash dimmed, i cant remember if it fully lit back up or stayed dim, but me being the smart person i am did it again and the dash went completely out, so now i have no idea how fast im going, how much gas i have or anything, its the UB3 dash (digital) i bought a whole new turn signal seitch (other one was broken and right rear blinker didnt light up when turned on) i am just wondering if it could be a short in one of the wires or a fuse blown or something? please help me !!! anyone!!! supreme_style21
First step would be the fuse.
gimp19
I have the crappy gas, speedometer, odometer base cluster and it wont work unless the dimmer switch is in the highest spot w/out turning on the dome light. Somtimes when it reads full tank, 188, xxxxxxx I just hit the dash pad and that fixes it. I've never heard of the nice gauges digi dash having problems though. phantomFE3
well its not a fuse since i checked the fuse box and there arent any fuses blown, and i have seen it flash on once or tiwce, just a fraction of a second, once at a stoplioght and once when i was in my gfs driveway, i was in reverse and wasnt doing anything just sitting there with my foot on the gas, its wierd, do you think the new blinker switch would fix the problem? Slade901
You may have to remove the Digital Instrument Cluster and resolder some electronic components especially the 14-pins Integrated Chip (IC). I used to have the same problem before.. I have to hit the dash pad to let the fuel, speedometer, odometer indicator to show up. I was basically making it worse and I have to hit it harder a couple of times and sooner or later it won't come on anymore and if I hit a hard bump then it sometimes comes on. I have finally fixed it by re-soldering some loose solder joints and re-soldered the IC and replaced some leaking capacitors.
phantomFE3
haha hitting it doesnt work for me, ive traid that maybe once or twice.. or 3 times... or 4... but oh well it doesnt work, im have to take out the piece of molding that goes around the guages anyway to put the turn signal switch on, if it doesnt work with the new turn signal switch ill take it out and check out if there are any wires loose or anything, thanks alot guys!! if there were a feedback meter i would give you guys positive feedback, but this site isnt as advanced as ebay, so ill just give you one of these damn right
ismellrealbad
i can almost guarantee a new turn signal switch will not fix it, but who knows. these cars can and will do some strange shit
Intlcutlass
You have a loose wire in the steering colum.....Mine did the same thing, once when I flipped on the cruise, and once when I tilted the wheel. Same thing , the dash went completely out. In my case, I blew the fuse, but if have the wrong fuse in the box (higher amp) in may not pop. tgk
I have a 88 GP LE, it has the Digital dash, for the past couple of years I have telltale that goes on and off (oil pres and water temp). When bang on the dash, sometime it will work. I took the cluster out, resolder most joints and it cures one of the light. Past months I am getting dissappearing speedo, odo, fuel level.. this is temperature dependent, and I will need to resolder all joints on the display board, which is tricky as it has fine pitch components. If you are not into doing this, theres a repair shop which charge $120+ for refurb your cluster. check using msn for instrument cluster repair. Hope this helps. Hope this helps. Try to re-solder that 14 pins IC (Integrated Chip). If some of your capacitors have crud in it, it is time to replace it because the crud is the capacitor's electrolyte that hardened. When the capacitors leak, it does not hold the right amount of charge because it is leaking. Changes in temperature will also change the amount of leakage within the capacitors. Check out my journey on that same issue. http://www.geocities.com/southbeach/sands/2476/automobile/digital_instrument_cluster.htm
Intlcutlass
I'll be honest, I never fixed it. It only happened to me twice, and because it was once when I turned on the cruse, and the other time when I tilted the wheel, I knew automaticly it's a loose wire in the colum. It has not happened to me for about 6 months. If I were you, and this my sound a little strange, this is what I would do. Take off the panel below the colum, you will then see a big terminal block that plugs from the colum to your wiring harness in the car. VERY CARFULLY wigle each wire on the block leading up through the colum. If it is a loose wire or a wire thats rubbing against somthing it shouldn't you may have moved it just out of place from were it was shorting out. If it's not a wire, then you souldn't have harmed anything, as long as you are gentle enough. I don't know how to take apart a colum, nor would I even try. I don't know if I have been of help or not, but best of luck to ya......
phantomFE3
well i replaced the turn signal switch and i had t run all the wires coming from the steering column down through a little thing, so i wouldnt be a wire i dont think, ill try soldering that 14 pin connector
