Addicted2bass
I searched, but couldnt find a post with my exact problem. Once the torque converter has unlocked and i am doing 50-55mph and around 1800rpm my rpms will randomly jump up 100-400rpm, sometimes it will drop right back down, sometimes i have to let off the gas a bit. It wont do it if im coasting at 50 and the engine is only at like 1500-1600rpm. It also seems to get worse the farther i drive, as the tranny warms up. Also twice now ive started my car and the rpms have been high, once it was at 3000!! The other time around 1600. Also it sounds like i might have a vacum leak, there is a whining sound coming from somewhere in the engine at idle. It gets higher pitched when i get on the throttle a little, after that it goes away. Im not sure if either of these things are related. Its a 96 Grand Prix with the 3.1 btw. Andrew
yeah you might have a vac leak somewhere, when you rev it up the engine is louder than the leak.

Addicted2bass
Sounds similar what I'm having. Yea i read your post, it sounds very similar. Have you figure out your problem yet? Does anyone know how hard it is to get to the torque convertor selonoid? I heard the tranny has to be somewhat taken apart.
Addicted2bass
Does anyone else have any ideas?
z34Phoenix
for the solonoid im pretty sure the trany needs to be cracked like an egg :-P but i would check for a vac leakk first... you can spray with starting fluid and if the idle jumps you found your leak. how does your trany fluid look? Pontiac6KSTEAWD
Its a 96 with a 3100 BTW.. Find, and fix that vacume leak first. Then check the brake light switch. If the road vibration is causeing the brake pedal to move, it might be sending a signal to the ECM to turn off the TCC. Then check your coils, sounds like one could be intermitently going out, maybe a module.
Addicted2bass
My tranny fluid looks good. Red, and it doesnt smell burnt. I had it changed like 7000 miles ago. Im not sure i have a vac leak, least time i thought i did the noise turned out to be coming from the a/c compressor. To check for it i should spray starting fluid around areas that it might be leaking? My brake pedal definalty isnt sticking cuz ive tried pulling up on it when the RPMs go up on me. Ive also locked the torque converter by pushing the brake a tiny bit when im goin like 50-55. It seems like every time i do this the RPMs go up the exact same amount (like 400rpms i think). But when the rpms randomly jump on me its been anywhere between 100 and 400. If it is a TC problem wouldnt the rpms always be jumping up by the same amount?
