Any way to get a J-body 282 to work in a W-body?

Hey I have a 96 Cutlass Supreme, that is going to need a tranny, and I F-ing hate automatics, especially 4T60-E's :gr_guns:. I've burnt up 3 of them owning 4 Cutlass's. I put one in my 94, and that one went out, not saying I didn't beat that one, but still I just don't like them, they can't take my driving style lol :gears: The one in my 96 has completely burnt up the TCC clutch because it was locking up in 2nd through 4th instead of just 4th. I am putting in a radiator, and the tranny fluid that ran out was black as hell, looked like motor oil with 6,000+ miles. I don't give the rest of the tranny long either. I have available to me a 88 Cavalier Z24 with a blown 2.8 and it has the HM-282 as does my 90 Z24. I'd like to get it, tear out the 282 parts, and throw them in my 96 Cutlass, and use the rest of the car as a parts car for my 90 Z24. I figured I could use a 3.1 flywheel, or even the one from the 2.8??? and it should bolt right up, I'd probably have to figure out on my own where to cut a hole and mount the clutch/master cylinder to the firewall. I know I will have to reprogram the ECM to run the manual, right? I don't think the intermediate shaft would be long enough for the W. As far as mounts I have no idea about that part. Has anyone ever done this? I think a black 96 2 door Cutlass with a mint 3100 and a 5 speed would be some sweet shit.

I recieved a PM from "Bake82" and he said the J-body 282's have a different case, and he also told me that the 88 Z24 wouldn't have an intermediate shaft, but I am pretty sure my 90 has one. Not sure what else would be there, here are some pics.

(I'm not trying to prove him wrong, or be an ass, but value everyone's opinion and would like to find out if it can be done)

I stand corrected that they don't have one. It's just that it is not the same length.

The outer casing is different and there is no place for the transmission to mount to the subframe. Does not matter what subframe you work. They transmissions mount different in the two cars.

Also the slave cyclinders are different which I believe will make it difficult to use.

If you want a manual it's way way better to get one from a w-body for the reasons I said. Even if you could get the transmission to bolt to the subframe, you'd still need to find a w-body intermediate shaft which if you find that, you've found a w-body 5 speed tranny. Hold out for a w-body five speed and you'll be happy!!

You also need the brake booster, the inside-car pedal bracket(which has to be modified to fit the inside dash bar) the firewall plate...AND...the obsolete-imposible-to-find-new Manual trans mount for the W-body 282. Check out brian's page http://www.brian89gp.com/ and my cardomain page. You also need 5-speed axles, Autozone got them cheap-$65 a piece LLT waranty.

Thanks for helping me out, I'll be on the lookout for a w-body 282, looks like a lot of work, but I'd still like to put one in there. My 3100 runs like a top, and has no problems whatsoever, but the tranny is shit. Will I be able to mount a w-282 to my 96 subframe? I assume it is the same as the earlier w subframes since the Cutlass never went to the 1.5 or 2 style, but just wondering if they kept them the same after they discontinued the 5-speed on the later models.

No problem to the subframe. It is mounting the clutch pedal that becomes an issue. Check out the link MIKO gave you and you'll be on your way!

I still have my 91 International that needs a motor, it has the HM-284. The only problem is I don't want to chop up either car. In my situation the best solution would be to swap the 3100 and all components into the 91 instead of putting another 3.4 in there, then part the 96 out, but I don't see many black 96 CS coupes around here at all, and its a damn nice looking car. It does have a lot of problems besides the transmission, but they are all easy fixes, I guess for $500 I shouldn't bitch. The only thing I've had to do to it in the 6 months I've owned it is put in a radiator. My friend thought it would be a good idea to hook a chain to the metel peice under the radiator while getting pulled out of a drift the other weekend. Well thanks for the help, I think I'll stick to my plan of getting another 3.4 into the 91, and then try to find a w-282 for the 96, why have just 1 Cutlass when you can have 2
