J Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I know it's not specific, but it sounds like a whine/ barings going bad. Could it be the waterpump? It sounds like thats where it's coming from. If so add that to my list this weekend Quote
slick Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 Use a piece of hose or screwdriver and put it to your ear to narrow it down. Quote
97loudcut Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I never really hear water pumps whining.. could be power steering or alternator Quote
cutty Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I never really hear water pumps whining.. could be power steering or alternator i agree my power steering pump, whine's really bad the colder it is outside. Quote
J Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 but this is all the time, when it's warm or cold. I'm going to try to get a video tomorrow of it. The pwr steering has pressure and fluid is full, and i don't feel any binding even in cold weather. WTF? Quote
Crazy K Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I beleive my 3100 hybrid is a silent motor. all I can hear is a whining power steering pump. replace it and I wont be able to hear shit! Quote
Psych0matt Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 my PS pump has been whining since the swap. My mechanic laughingly told me it was on its way out, but that was about a year ago Quote
z34duck Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 not always but most of the time if its the power steering pump you can hear the whine change if you turn the wheels back and forth while you are sitting still lol Quote
DiscoStudd Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 My money's on the alternator. You're stuck with the "wonderful" CS-130, which has a poor case design (not enough surface area for cooling, and the bearings are too small) so it's quite common for the bearings to take a shit, often taking the voltage regulator with it. Use a piece of hose or screwdriver and put it to your ear to narrow it down. That's the best piece of advice, right there! Quote
J Posted March 9, 2007 Author Report Posted March 9, 2007 i'll try all these things, but my DIS says a constant 14.0-14.4 volts Quote
turby Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 my DIS says a constant 14.0-14.4 volts Doesn't mean you don't have a bad bearing. Pull the alt. and stand it on the pulley. Put some wd-40 on the bearing. Just enough to cover it. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Wipe it off and put it back on the car. Quote
5speedz34 Posted March 9, 2007 Report Posted March 9, 2007 I told you to take the belt off and spin all the pulleys. Do that and the screwdriver thing. The WP was replaced in Sep. 2005 from what Pat told me last night. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 Ok Jay...if you got the service notebook you can look through that to see exactly when the water pump was changed. I know i did it in sept 05 along with the upper and lower radiator hoses. The car did sit for like 2 1/2 years and the pulleys were rusted up pretty bad. the water pump pulley is actually one i got from a car that was fresh in the JY. I had to do the same with the belt tensioner. I'd put my money on the alt or ps because it ALWAYS made that noise. Personally, i don't know why you're even gonna mess with it. Quote
rockfangd Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 my ps steering pump has been (going ) for 3 years lol. stupid mechanics. just because a w makes a few little noises lets spend alot of money. Anyway i just bought a brand new pump with resevoir off of ebay for like 45 dollars Quote
97loudcut Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 Is it that hard to determine where the whining is coming from on the pulley side!!? Jesus! Quote
J Posted March 10, 2007 Author Report Posted March 10, 2007 yeah it is, i chaned the alyt cuz the bearings were bad, the noise is still there. i used a wrench as a stethoscope and it seems like the the pwr steering pump. So i'm going to that tomorrow along with fix the leaking exhaust, fix the rust and other stupid shit. BTW pat i need the factory keyless remote, and the service records. Quote
1990lumina Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 My power steering has always had a "bearings going bad" sound to it - along with a wobble in the pulley (looks like it's gonna fall off when spinning around lol)... I'd just leave it till it dies, but I also appreciate that you want everything 100% Quote
J Posted March 10, 2007 Author Report Posted March 10, 2007 i am anal to a fault sometimes, i don't like to pull into a place and have my car sound like its getting ready for take off. I like quiet and smooth on a daily driver. What really gets me is it seems is i got an exhaust leak up by the manifold in the last day or so . I'm going to be doing so painting when it gets warmer, rust on the roof! Quote
97loudcut Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 Jeez, I didn't realize so much was wrong with that Cutlass! It's got half as many miles as mine a double the problems.. *knock on wood* Sometimes some new power steering fluid (meaning suck out all the old stuff and put new stuff in) will solve the problem. Quote
J Posted March 10, 2007 Author Report Posted March 10, 2007 no not really double to problems, it's old and it sat. I just want things fixed thats all/ Quote
J Posted March 10, 2007 Author Report Posted March 10, 2007 I put it up on a jack and found out that i think it is the barings in the ac compressor. I got prices and it seems as though it'll be $150, How hard is it to do? Quote
5speedz34 Posted March 10, 2007 Report Posted March 10, 2007 I put it up on a jack and found out that i think it is the barings in the ac compressor. I got prices and it seems as though it'll be $150, How hard is it to do? Easy. Couple bolts hold the compressor on. Put a new compressor on a refill the freon. The thing is you have to find a way to exchange the freon. Unless R134A can be emptied into the atmosphere. Quote
