3.1 water pump issue...kinda

Hey guys. I have a little issue and I'm hopin u can help.

Last summer I had a coolant leak and couldn't quite find it. I traced it to what I thout was the waterpump gasket. It ended up not being that but I had already pulled the pump so I had to get the old gasket off to put the new one on. Here is where I became a complete dumbass. I decided to take the gasket off with a dremel. All was going well until I left it in one place too long and put a groove in the metal. I tried sealant and stuff to plug it but it is still leaking.

What am I lookin at replacing here to fix this problem? it appears that the place that the water pump sits is removable and can be changed, is this true?

any info here would be very appreciated as I am goin to attempt to take care of this on my day off friday.

thanx,

Sean

I believe thats part of the front cover, so unless you wanna change that whole entire thing out....

How big is the groove? You might be able to get away with RTV silicone. Just put the gasket and water pump back on, with the RTV in that spot where it has the groove. Let it sit for a day or two to allow the RTV to set up. You should have no problems...

Grab a can of "The Right Stuff" it's like $13, but the best sealant I've ever used. It's an RTV. Use it on both mating surfaces, with a new gasket and reassemble it. Should have no issues (assuming it's not that much damage)

Yea, it is part of the front cover, and it is not an easy job. If you think a LIM gasket is hard, a front cover is twice as bad on the 3.1L. Depending on how bad you want it fixed, I would say take the pump back off, and tow it to someone with aluminum welding capabilities, have em put a bead in the ridge, and surface it smooth again. Or maybe try JB Weld, but it usually doesn't hold to aluminum well. RTV may work for a while, but I wouldn't expect more than a few months each time you seal it, and each time you prep it you are gonna lose some material.

thanx guys for the replies. I jave thought about having someone tig it and smooth it out and that is probably what I will do on the end.

for now to get the car running I will use the rtv and let it sit. the groove isn't too bad, it just leaks out until the system depressureizes.

I have some front covers for 3100's I was planning on just selling for scrap. If you want it, pay for shipping and a snack wrap and it's yours. They aren't THAT hard to change out. The alternator, P/S, belt tensioner have to come off, as well as the crankshaft dampener/pulley. May have to loosen the oil pan bolts near the cover mating surface but still not a huge deal.
