95oldsVan
Our 97 Grand prix, with the 3100 auto,is at the transmission shop. They are unable to track down what is wrong yet. The tranmsission would slip bad and rev the engine at times, and threw a trans code. However, when that happened,my wife noticed the speedo was out and wasnt moving. The trans shop went through it and decided to put a new speed sensor in it,and said it was fixed for the first test drive and did not need a trans rebuild. However, when they got back to their garage the problem came right back,so theyre going to try and track down what it might be. Is there anything,(TSB Maybe)or something that can cause a transmission to slip/converter disengages and spins at times that may related to the speedo not working at times? If we dont need a rebuild, thats great news for us,just need some ideas what else it could be. slick
VSS? Maybe it's not getting signal from the ecm?
95oldsVan
I think they said they tried a new VSS first, and it didnt fix it.They will check more out tomorrow, but they really believe its not internal or trans failure.
White93z34
if the vss solved the problem there may be a problem with the VSS wires themselves, check the connections for corrosion.
Crazy K
if the vss solved the problem there may be a problem with the VSS wires themselves, check the connections for corrosion. x2 probabaly a chaffed wire that intermittantly grounds. 95oldsVan
Thanks for all the great replies all...the car came back from the shop a few days after I posted, and this technician busted his arse to track down the problem and it was indeed a wiring problem. The car is fine now and tranny shifts as it should. I believe they said what you guys said,a problem with the wiring to the VSS and the ecm. Any tranny shop could have easily sold me a rebuilt unit, without me being the wiser, and it will eventually need one down the road, but not as of now. They saved me alot of money. Just has alot of mileage but still going nicely.Im glad I can trust my tranny shop not to sell me a rebuild and spend the time to track down an actual problem.Just wanted to update everyone that helped and read this topic to see whassup.
