PCGUY112887 Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 My alternator is making a grinding noise, seems like it just started since the belt tensioner was replaced (old one was about to fall apart). Alternator has 20k miles on it... worry about it or not? Quote
jeremy Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 I'd replace it, hell it is only a 10 minute job on a 3100 Quote
PCGUY112887 Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 Umm so how do you replace it? Unbolt power wires, unbolt the alt brackets, but how do you loosen the belt so you can get it off there? Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Theres a spot on the tensioner for a rachet. 3/8" drive. I honestly wouldnt worry about it. But really this "grinding" how bad is it? Every alternator will do this to some extent. Since they are not perfectly quiet ya know Quote
J Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 prpbaby the bearings going bad (how do you spell that word?) Not to hijack, but is a 3.1 and a 3100 alt the same? Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 No they are not. They are two different alternators. Quote
PCGUY112887 Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 Well the grinding isn't REAL bad, but if your very quiet you can hear it inside of the car, and def outside of the car. Could the belt just be rubbing wrong or the pulley be lose or something? I dunno why the alt would die after such few miles (for an alt that is). Quote

If you got a remanufactured one its not surprising for it to die early. I had one die in 5 miles before. Seriously. Hopefully yours has a warranty on it. Quote

PCGUY112887 Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 I have no idea if there is a warranty on it, only reason I know it was replaced is because I have all service records for the car since it was bought new. Quote
rockfangd Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 alternators are too common of a prob on these anyhow so after going through 3 remans i said fuck it and got a nice ho alternator, no regrets on that one Quote
PCGUY112887 Posted February 26, 2007 Author Report Posted February 26, 2007 Where did you get your HO from? Quote
Psych0matt Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 yah, if mine goes again im going to get a nice one. the stock one died, and since then im now on my third one in two years (or maybe i should just learn to do it myself ) Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Ill never change an alternator on a DOHC. Im sorry. It takes me 5 minutes to change the one on my 3100 Quote
slick Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Where did you get your HO from? The streetcorner. LOL Actually... there are tons of sites that sell them. They can range from poor quality to insanely expensive but awesome quality. Quote
