servoalt
I have a 1995 Cutlass Supreme with the 3100/4t60e combo. Both are failing and I have the opportunity to purchase a working 1996 3100/4t60e combo. My questions are: 1. Will this all bolt up the same as the 95 stuff and be a "drop in?" 2. Can I keep my wiring harness in the car and stay with OBD1.5? 3. What would be necessary to switch to OBDII (if I have to) 4. Are the axles between the two years the same? I cannot find any info on anyone who's done this as of yet...
digitaloutsider
Just swap the whole thing in. Don't touch your wiring. Everything else is identical. (EGR might not be, I don't know).
Crazy K
egr is the only difference on the mechanical side, as well as the relocation of the temp sensor from the rear head into a 3 way combo senor replcing the two seperate sensors the 95 had. it can be done and is not hard. do you want to convert the car to OBD2? swap everything as is and you'll have to repin the wiring connector at the firewall. (not hard to do) and use the 96 linear EGR otherwise, to run the drivetrain as a 95 on the existing wiring and pcm.... rewire the temp sensor to use the 96+ sensor OR drill and tap the rear head to fit the sensor. then fix the EGR by swapping the 96 upper intake and the EGR tube for the ones from the 95. (easy to do) everything else I can thing of is the same. and use the 95 digital EGR.

servoalt
...to run the drivetrain as a 95 on the existing wiring and pcm.... rewire the temp sensor to use the 96+ sensor OR drill and tap the rear head to fit the sensor. I guess I don't understand how I would rewire the temperature sensor to work with the 95 computer. Also, I have had no responses if the transmission is the same. I've heard it's hit and miss and there were minute differences between the years of 4t60's. I don't want to pull all my stuff and find out what I bought is incompatible and screw over my buddy with my car in his garage LOL If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks... digitaloutsider
CrazyK summed it up in the first sentence.. it's the same thing..
Crazy K
I gave all the answers! temp sensors: 95 has two. 96 has one. the wires that go to the 95's sensors can be spliced to the 96+ harness that feeds the 96 sensor. three wires cut and attach. if you have the 96+ harness and pcm and everything, the total thing can be swaped to have the 96+ pcm run everything. under the hood of your 95.
