Two questions about 94 GP and 3100 engines

Okay, I got two questions here.

#1. If the vehicle speed sensor is going out, will it make the speedometer peg out when accelorating, and then give highly incorect readings with no load?

#2. Will a 4T65 trans mount up to a 3100 series engine?

I got my GP fixed a little over a week ago, and when we called the shop to do a spontanious check while they were working on it the guy running the shop and doing most of the work on my trans said that the trans in my car was a 4T65. He told an interesting story, that he expected a 4T60-E and after the floor guys got the trans out of the GP he walked out intot he shop and saw the "huge pan" as he said and commented "Wow, what did that beast come out of?" when the floor guy said it came out of my GP Allan (the kind gentleman who fixed my car) got down on his hands and knees and cleaned off the ID plate because he couldn't believe it came out of the GP.

Anyway, just my wondering what is really going on inside my car here.

1 can it be verified that the odometer is acting up too? if the odometer is ok then it should be a bad cluster instead.

2well... isn't the 4t65 used in later cars with the 3100, and even 3400? like a 00-05 impala?

Well, the question about the tranny itself was only academic, since it is there and it works.

As for the speed sensor, yes, the odometer is also malfunctioning. I am under the impression that when the trans went out, it may have caused some damage to the speed sensor.

Bump, Bump!!

Also wondering if the bad speed sensor could cause poor gas milage?

(No I haven't changed the little bugger yet, haven't had time and money at the same time.)

I know that when I bought my '97 Cutty I bought it under the assumption that it needed a new tranny but the VSS wiring had a problem and the speedo was jumping ALL over the place and the car seemed to have a severe transmission slip....the guy sold it cheap because he thought the tranny was gone

well... if you are driving all the time in the wrong gear..... then yes it could.

it does sound like your cluster is ok.

a VSS is cheap enough that I would just replace it. do this next.

alternative problems include a bad ecm/pcm or damaged wiring

Well, not having any problems with the trans slipping. But i will be checkin the wiring.

no, driving in correct gear. just wondering if the speed sensor would effect the fuel milage

Well, it's been awhile and no other replies. Just want to update the thread and my situation. I replaced the VSS, and that wasn't the problem, I'm still having the mostly non functional occasionally erratic speedometer. I'm going to be going over the wiring as soon as I can. If anyone has any diagrams that shows where the wiring is supposed to be routed I would appreciate them. I have a manual that shows the wiring schematics (I.E. what is connected to what) but it doesn't show anything about where under the hood the wires are routed so I can check for rough places that would rub the wiring. :frown:

If I'm totally off base, ignore me, but might there be some very large difference between the 4T60E and the 4T65E programming in the ECM and the shadetree mechanics who swapped the newer engine in didn't bother to change the ECM?

umm. I remember this thread!

lets re-start here.

find your pcm/ecm What is the service part number?

and what year is your car again?

are ALL the plugs on the transmission plugged in?

and yeah... your gas mileage will look like shit if the odometer is horribly inaccurate.

Okay, I know my gas mileage would look like shit if I figured it off the odometer reading, But I'm not that stupid. I know the distances of my daily driving and keep track of where I drive and then when I refuel I compute based on how many gallons of fuel I had to put into the car. I know it isn't quite as accurate as a properly working odometer but since I use a GPS to keep track of mileage while driving it is pretty accurate.

And as for the trans, yes as far as I can track all the plugs are plugged it. (I.E. I haven't found any plugs unplugged {except the fuel pump test terminal, but then that one is supposed to be})

I guess most of you guys aren't going to be as much help as I thought or hoped.

Perhaps I should find a new message board to use.
