PCGUY112887
Well my LIM has been leaking externally on my 3100 for some time now, and just about a week ago it started to leak inside so I decided I needed to have the gasket done quick. I have 3400 heads and an intake here that I planned to put on, but there is a ton of snow and ice outside, it's way too cold for me to do it myself. I also don't have a few days I can screw with the intake (since i've never done anything like it before) so I decided to take it to my mechanic to do it. $777 later, I got it back with all Felpro gaskets (had him use the Problem Solving gasket with the metal in it), a new tstat, and a new belt tensioner (I was told mine was about to fall apart). However a few things have all of a sudden come up now... 1. My brakes are squishy. I mean it's acceptable but they used to be much tighter... I bled them in the fall. I don't know if they feel weird because of the harsh cold and snow or what... I can't find any reason the brakes would feel different after a LIM job. Brake booster line looks fine... 2, noticed this under my hood all of a sudden http://i9.tinypic.com/2aeqsdf.jpg That's my TB cable (other good cable is cruise control). Is that bit of fray something to worry about, or just put a bit of tape or something on it so it doesn't do it anymore? 3. All of a sudden my alt is making a "crunchy/clicky" sound as it spins, in a very rythmic tune. It didn't do it before I took it up there, and I highly doubt it's going bad since the GM dealership actually put a new one on about 3-4 years ago. Any idea of how I could be getting a noise after an alt was removed and put back on? Thanks.
97loudcut
Take it back to your mechanic
PCGUY112887
I'm trying to get some insight into these issues before I go back up there. I don't see ANY way for the brakes to be squishier... and I was wondering if there was any "known" thing for a noise after removing/putting alt back... And TB, I can't prove they did it... I just wanna know what I should do about it.
rockfangd
well the damaged cable could cause a sticking throttle and get worse. that doesnt usually just happen for nothing though
PCGUY112887
What about my brakes/alt? The brakes is what REALLY gets me. I found that whoever actually did the work forgot to put the clamp back onto the upper intake where the brake booster connects, but that line connects fairly tight anyways but I put the clamp back and no change. I doubt you would have to take the master cyl. off for anything on a LIM job now would you? Or disconnect any brake lines to get to anything... Canada
No....nothing is done to the brakes other than the booster line...which would not cause that....if the booster was inop, you'd have a very hard pedal. Either its in your head, or it might be time for a brake job. The throttle cable....they do that...all cables do. Watch it for more fray...it will break someday. The alternator gets set off to the side....and if the LIM is cheated (not as bad as it sounds, just the coil packs, alternator, and rear valve cover get left on) it wouldn't of been touched. Sounds like it could be a bad bearing or a problem with the windings or something....either way...there is nothing that can be done (by purpose or accident) that would cause it do go bad. And just because it was replaced 3 or 4 years ago, doesn't mean it went bad. Did they switch it to 3400 stuff?
PCGUY112887
I was going to have them switch it but since I wasn't going to pay to have them take off heads too, I decided that just the upper/lower wasn't worth it. I took it back up there, throttle cable is getting replaced for free Tuesday. He said he noticed the alt noise too... I know it all came off because I saw it all off, and all gaskets above the heads were replaced. As far as the brakes, no idea, they seem to be getting tighter now... Mach 5
Could it have possibly been that the brake booster was not getting the vacuum provided because of the leaking inkate manifold? Thus now there is a soft pedal. Also with the new belt tensioner, there could be more pressure on the alt pulley making it sound like its bad. I don't know what else it could be. rockfangd
ther is another possibility that i have seen happen. There is a one way check valve for the brake booster and if it is installed backwards it will cause the brakes to be very spongy

And I never thought about the tensioner pulling on the alt harder...
