Grand Moff Joseph
Well, my rear valve cover gasket has developed a very small leak (a few drops now and then), and the leak has been confirmed by my mechanic. So, does the engine have to be pulled to get to said valve cover? And, in general, how much of a PITA is this repair? Thanx! Joe
Addicted To Boost
You can probably just rock the engine forward to do it...
Robby1870
You can probably just rock the engine forward to do it... Yeah, take the plenum off if you want to and/or the alternator. It would be a good time to change the PCV valve if it's bad.
Crazy K
I've been able to change it without removing the plenum, but you have to remove the alternator, rock the engine and use a univeral joint, I think.
5speedz34
Its a T-25 IIRC to remove the bolts. I would replace the valve cover grommets to.
J
did your valve cover grommets come out? When i replaced mine they didn't and i had to find some fast!

What do you mean, exactly? Do you mean that I need to remember to change those at the same time as the gasket, or what?

I didn't even rock the engine forward, took aout 25 minutes for R&R. What the heck car was that in? lol!! x2 on removing the alternator (for extra room) and DEFINETLY gotta tilt the engine forward. Also carefully get the vacuum lines out of the way.

J
i replaced the valve cover itself (powder coated one) and the grommets didn't come out at all, so there i was cold as hell with my car torn apart with the valve cover off, and no way to put it back on. mfewtrail
Rotating the engine forward and removing the alternator is by far the easiest way to go about this. Do not remove the alternator by itself, leave it attached to the bracket it sits in and remove the bracket from the engine.

And Brian, you probably seen it before but this is for you in honor of your newest purchase. Nice Never seen that!

digitaloutsider
this thread reminds me of the "pull the engine to do the sparkplugs" Doesn't hold a candle to removing the fender to do the alternator on the LQ1.
Canada
Fender? Wow....someone REALLY doesn't know how to wrench if they do that. LQ1 alternators are NOT that hard.
