gmrulz4u Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 I just want to know WHERE your vacuum leak was? Specifically just for the 2.8 and 3.1 MPFI engines. If possible, elaborate by telling me what the problems were before, and the benefits after fixing the leak...and if you remember, how did you discover the leak... THANKS A MILLION! Quote
Robby1870 Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 Well, I know how to detect them. Shoot some carb cleaner around where you think it is, and the motor should surge. I have my 3.1L apart now, and from what I saw, the valley pan gasket, the edge of it by the bell housing, was a little rough when I took it off. The plenum gaskets are troublesome from what I have heard, although they are metal, I guess some RTV would help Robby Quote
Slade901 Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 I've come across some info that constant usage of the tb cleaner, carb cleaner, etc. is not good for your gaskets. They will weaken the gaskets and accelerate their wear. Others had suggested to use smoke just like "smoke maker you see in disco clubs " which is forced inside the throttle body to spot any leak. I would still use the tb cleaner, etc., to spot any leak but after the test I guess I would also try to spray some "bottled water spray" to minimize the risk of the tb cleaner from messing up the gaskets. slick Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 I have my 3.1L apart now While you have it apart, are you gonnna be doing a lot of porting and polishing, along with performance mods of course? Quote
Baddflash Posted June 10, 2003 Report Posted June 10, 2003 Another way is to stick a hose on the end of a propane torch and use it the same way as carb cleaner to check for leaks. Quote

Well, Im doing the rocker arms, of course, but nothing else. Money limits me there. I would love to port/polish the heads and intakes while I have it apart, but I just dont have the funds. Plus, alot of my time has been taken up with just cleaning the engine compartment and intakes and stuff. This is the first time that the motor has been apart, (Im pretty sure). Its got 90K on it, and the intake manifold runnners where pretty dirty and so was the EGR ports. Anyway, I think, with the rockers, and just gettin things clean, its gonna help alot. I also am by-passing the TB coolant lines and installed an adjustable vacuum modulator on the tranny. The wiring is getting rewrapped and all the good stuff Robby Quote
