3.1 Exhaust ???? Need Help.

I just got back from the muffler shop after getting new exhaust done. They installed a Magnaflow free-flow muffler in place of the cat and ran 2.5" pipe to back splitt into duals behind rear axle, there's nothing else no other mufflers just straight pipes.

It sound good but something doesn't seem right. It's like there's not enough back-pressure cause it feels sort of flat.

Am I going to damage the heads or anything else??????

Should I get mufflers installed at back????

I really need to know cause I'm scared I'm going to wreck something.

Well, you wont damage anything, dont worry. I did bascially the same thing, with mine at first, had straight pipe where Cat was, then split into two mufflers at the rear bumper, and I felt more power, but the torque was a little flat. So, I put in a turbo tube where the Cat was and I noticed more torque down low and a little more power.

Yeah thats exactly it. I thought I heard somewhere that you could damage alum heads if there isn't enough backpressure, good to know for sure.

I'm going out tomorrow and getting a pair of mufflers for the back. It's way to friggen loud sounds like my muffler fell off, but man does it sound cool especially when you punch it!!

The other thing is now it wants to shift way to early when you punch it, if you put it do the boards with it in OD,D or 2nd it shifts at 25mph?????? But it will down shift just fine if at any speed???

Do I need to clear the computer?? Will it help or even matter???

Maybe it will be fine after I put on mufflers?

I think your exauhst velocity is way too low. The mufflers will definitly "un-flatten" the low-end. Re-learning the computer might help with the idle (if its off) but you'll notice a big difference with mufflers

You shouldnt have to reset the comp. These computers are pretty good about adjusting to bolt on mods. But yeah, get some mufflers and your exhaust gas velocity will pick up and it should go back to normal shifting and stuff

I'm not sure what I should do for mufflers? I'm very limited for space and cash for extra mufflers, but I got to do something.

Should I just stick on a pair of cherrybombs of some sort?

Should I get a pair of mufflers and try to figure some way to get them installed?

Cheap is the key thing here as I have way too many expenses right now with all the other work I'm doing.

Thanks,

You need to give the car 200 or 300 miles to get the computer tuned in.

Less back pressure = less low end torque.

If you go glasspacks I recomend Flow Tech "purple hornies" Dumb name great quality pack. Yeah, they're purple but I painted mine silver.

They are heavy, have spiral scallop cuts inside instead of little bitty holes. More like a motorcycle muffler. The 2.25" ones are slip-on. Just cut the pipe where you want em'. Slip them in, weld, wha la!

Aren't you getting a horrible raspy sound when you accelerate? The packs will cure that.

Tip: do not ever buy resonator tips. I wasted 40 bucks and have tubes stuck in them to de-resonate.

If you do go packs, please check out the Flow Tech's. I compared to thrushers and it was night and day.

I actually have those purple hornies (I don't know why they called them purple when they looked like pink to me!, anyway) on my belair, they were pretty good and the pack lasted for about 2 years before it all blew out.

The only problem I have is I need something thats like only a foot long. Most are 18" or so. I found a set by APC which would fit perfect except for the 6" dia. tip on the end, can we say ricer!! The search continues but atleast I know what I want to do.

Yes it is horribly loud but I think it sounds cool.
