Dirty Rockstar
Very suddenly too.. I left a little earlier to warm my car up before work, and I turned the key, I heard the ding, went to turn it, then nothing.. Bell disappeared, no lights, no locks or attempt to start.. This is a new one for me.. I haven't got the time to test the battery, but IIRC, it is new within the last 2.5 years of ownership.. ..I looked at my Aux post and it LOOKED okay, but I'll investigate further tonight.. ..Anyone else have ANY thoughts? Has this happened to anyone here before? I've had a battery die in cold temps, but not like this.. It was literally SUDDEN.. Like on one minute, off the next.. Thanks guys.. I'll try and sneak onto a workstation at work today to see if anyone here has any input.. I appreciate any help you all can be..
Psych0matt
did the solenoid click or anything? mine has a bad habit of clicking and not starting, but i think i have a ground problem at the starter. otherwise i would suspect that the battery is dead, so either your batt. or alt may be on the way out? ns87
That exactly happened to me when one of my battery cable got loose. I thought I really messed something up on my fog light instalation
Psych0matt
yeah, that could be too. i know when i replaced the starter on my cav, it was fine for like a week, and then just randomly on my drive home one night, bam, instantly everything went dead. tightened the loose + cable and never had another problem
3pt1lumina
Check for loose battery cables or corrosion on the terminals. It seems too sudden for the battery to just die, but I guess don't rule that out either until you check it.
19Cutlass94
Look at the chip in your key.
Dirty Rockstar
Im thinkin the smae thing with the battery myself.. WAAAAY too sudden for it to have a dead battery.. ..Ill be checking the cables.. And Matt, when I say dead, I mean DEAD.. No lights, locks.. NOTHING.. Not even the soelonoid click.. Thanks for the quick reply guys.. WIll update tonight.. PS internetz loopholes from work FTW!!
3pt1lumina
I think... don't quote me on this... but if the key goes bad, it just wont allow you to start the car, and the security light will go on. So basically, the car's electrical system will function correctly except for going to start the car with a bad key, which will kill the system until the key goes back to the run position? Although it has never happened to me, that's how I understand it. I could be wrong.
FordBoy
That cant be it he said everything goes dead. The same thing happoned to me when i was drivin it tho everything just shut off as it was running i thought oh shit so i had the computer scaned there was no prob (idle a little high but eh) then i took another look at the batter cause i had just changed it a week ur so before the + cable was loose. probly just shook itself loose. try to tighten up the bat. cables i bet that should fix the prob if not try getting a new bat. Psych0matt
sounds more and more like a bad/loose cable than anything. have you done/had done any work on it recently?
Dirty Rockstar
Alright, went out and fucked around a little bit.. ..It popped on for a second when I tried to put a volt meter on the bat. Tried starting, and the same thing happened again.. It went into "pre flight countdown" and the instand I try turning it over, off everyhting goes.. ..When I have more light and it isn't fucking snowing, Im going to look at some of the bigger fuses and relays, and the battery cables.. Thanks guys!
rockfangd
wll this may not help alot, but my 94 cutty did something shocking a few weeks ago. My battery is a month old, my alternator and terminals are spotless, also the aux post is tight and perfect. I drove my car all day that day then went to pick up food that evening came out with the food and turned on the key to find it did nothing at all, it was the same thing that would happen whey you try to start your car in gear. I was shocked so the first thing i did was check the aux post, tried it in every gear, you name it i did it. There was no security light besides when you first turn on the key and all the lights come on. So i kept on trying and all of a sudden i turned the key and it fired up like nothing ever happened. . it hasnt happened since.. i am still baffled about it as my car has never not started or stranded me somewhere. Dirty Rockstar
Ive had that happen myself man.. Except I still had accessories and all that.. THis is just bizarre.. Ill be battling the cold tomorrow all day until I get it fixed.. I need a car to take myself to the gas station to fill it up with.. Oh, and getting to work and such.. ..I am going to try the battery cables, the battery itself, and the underhood fuses.. I already checked the AUX post, and it seems to be alright.. I took it apart, cleaned the terminal and the nut but it had no effect..
rockfangd
that was how mine was i still had all of my accessories and also when i turned the key on all the cluster lights were normal
runt
I'm gonna have to say loose cable or something. I had this happen in the 'ol 96 Cutty. I went to start it one day and it was DEAD. Same exacty way though, my interior lit up when I got inside it dash came on with the key, but when I went to start the entire car went black. I'm not sure exactly what cable caused the problem, but I check every ground and nut/bolt I could get my hands on and it never happened again. Dirty Rockstar
Round one in sub zero temperatures: Tightened the battery terminals.. GOt it to light up, but then the same thing when I went to start.. I had to come in so my skin wouldnt freeze.. Ill be going back out in a couple minutes.. ..I am going to look at the underhood fuses next and see if theyre the problem or not.. Ill look at all the other connections as you suggested runt.. I got the starter to turn, but then click click click.. But the thing didnt shut off entirely again! Gonna try and get to my dads shop to pick up a new battery today so I still have light out there..
