Z34-5speed
Alright i have a 2.5inch Magnaflow catback on my Z. It comes from a Magnaflow cat to an 8inch glasspack to the dual Magnaflows. I was wondering how differant it would sound, and if it would set off any codes, if i removed the cat and in it's place put an 18inch resonator, i had one on my 93z and it sounded badass. Would it be really raspy or would the glasspack help that? For those of you who havent seen this... This is a video of my car's current exhaust setup. This is a video of the same setup going by at around 80 at the dragstrip. I don't like how it sounds from behind at WOT..., the loud noise at the begining is the intake... mfewtrail
Put a real resonator in place of the cat if you remove it(at least 12-18'' long), most exhaust shops carry them for cheap(if your local shops don't have any, ebay usually has plenty listed for cheap as well). Also, there will be no codes set, you don't have a downstream o2 sensor to set off a code. Without the cat, the exhaust is probably going to be a good bit louder... Z34-5speed
That is what i was planning on doing. Would it sound raspy-er or would the glasspack help that. Kyle

Sorry, i worded that badly, i mean a video of an LQ1 w/o a cat, but WITH Magnaflows.
Jcrow
Its not an Lq1 its 3.1, I just redid the whole exhaust. I used a glasspack in place of the catalytic converter (make sure you use the kind with holes and not louvers in the inner tube) I used thrush, it has the holes(higher flow) I made a custom y pipe in the rear going to 2 dynomax turbo mufflers. I used to have the same system without the glasspack, (straight pipe) now it is much quieter. If I want to hear the engine I need to turn the radio down, You can hear the intake noise over the exhaust at heavy throttle (air box has holes cut in the bottom). I also notice there is no reverb or boominess to the exhaust anymore. It is still louder than a factory exhaust though.
CNBZ34
Here's what I did with my 92 Z34 (LQ1) and it sounds awesome. First: I had installed Stainless magnaflow mufflers (wrapped, not chambered) and they were similar in size to the exsisting stock ones. I did this to maintian sound balance. It was loud and raspy. The volume I liked along with the low throaty tone. To aleviate the rasp, I had a 22 inch glasdpack installed in the straight portion of the pipe just prior to the split. Got rid of the rasp, but also a lot of volume. Now it was too quiet. So....off with the cat, and Finally got the sound I was looking for. Basically, my exhaust is as straight thru as you can get without straight pipe out the back. What I did notice is that my tips are now discoloring somewhat. I wish I could provide a video but I am unable to. But trust me, you won't be disapointed with the set up. I parked my car in valet parking over the weekend and finally for to hear it and the attendant got on it a little, I almost got a chubby. I never realized it sounded that nice. I've had it this way for a year now.
Jcrow
I know what you mean, I get a kick out of seeing my cars go with someone else driving. You dont see it much but you see what others see when your driving. Like woah my truck sounds like that

I've had it this way for a year now. I had about the same exact setup on my old Z. Straight-through Magnaflows, stainless w/tips, and an 18inch glasspack but i kept the cat. I love how it sounded but it looked like ass due to the bumper reinforcement in the back.
CNBZ34
The place that installed my mufflers did such a nice job, they tucked them up as high as they could then really kicked ass the way they placed the tips up in the cut outs and not sticking out 6 inches beyond the bumper like it was with the stock muffs. My pics I have here are with the OEM exhaust. I need to update my pictures.
Z34-5speed
Well, i have an appointment at the local muffler shop Thursday to have them cut out the cat and put an 18inch glasspack in its place, $50. If anyone thinks it will sound like ass please tell me now. Kyle
Z34-5speed
Well i had it done and to be honest..., it sounds exactly the same, except when it is coasting in 2nd or 3rd at a high speed, then it's louder. Well at least it flows better now. Kyle
Lee
I used the louvered glasspack and it cut the rasp very well. I bought the flowtech-"purple Hornies" dumb name great glasspack.
