Thoughts and opinions on HO alternators

Recommended Posts

So.... since the new vehicle does have a 3800, I figured I would go ahead and replace the stock alt with something that has a bit more umph to it. I know there are several on here that have had HO alternators, and I've heard mixed reviews.

Basically, I would like to know which brand you have gone with and your experience with them.

I have found about 6-7 different companies that I know that make HO alternators, and I also know I can get one rebuilt locally(not sure if HO or not). The prices I see range from $150-$450(I know the $450 is proven to work damn good).

So, lets hear em!

I submitted for a quote for my car. Aparantly it has the GM AD230 alternator. According to this PDF: http://www.highoutputalternator.com/PDF/Web%20PDFs%20-%20230.pdf , it will put out 120 amps at idle speed. It has a turn on speed of 500 rpm, which is fine. Looks like around a 220-225 amp output max, which is fine for me. I figure stock the vehicle uses around 90-100 amps. My current amplifier pulls right between 70-90 amps, and I plan on picking up another amplifier here soon for a set of components(so... like 30-40 amps). This means I'm looking around a total of 210-230 amps, so this may be right about the range im looking for.

Obviously the amps pulled is at max power, and mine are never that high, so I did overguesstimate by a good amount, but I want to play it safe.

You have got to be the only person to respond to their own post, twice, before anyone else does.

So are you picking one up from them? If so give an update after a couple months of running it. And let us know the price of course.

Well you know my opinion about them!

But really, I pulled a 144.5dB, thats on the STOCK 100amp alt. and thats with the other amp for my components running at max as well! So if I took out the fuse for the amp for my components, I would have done better.

Really, unless your going to be doing SPL comps like everyday or need some ungodly demand for electrical power, I dont think you should get one. I mena if you have your system going, your lights will still dim at idle and low engine speeds, until the rpm goes up.

off topic, but do you have any pictures of the Bonne?

Not yet, still sitting in my dads driveway 2 hours away. I will get some when the Acura is gone.

True, the but the Acura's stock alternator is 105 amp, and even driving along at a 2000 rpm cruise, the lights would STILL dim pretty significantly. My Directed amp pulls some serious amount of current, hence my thought of needing a higher amp alternator.

damn right. Don't waste your money on aftermarket halfassed alt's with extra windings shoved in there. Worst you might need is a different plug for the minivan alternator and I think the charge wire has a larger eyelet. No biggie.
