zx21 Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Is it possible to take the pump out, deleting the pully, and using the shorter belt available (since there's two different lengths for the 3.1) to still fit the other pullys? Quote
Dark Ride Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I'm Gonna Say No, although I'm not positive. And it would not be a good idea, IMHO. Quote
gp90se Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Can't saftly remove the PS pump on a w-body car, the rack won't live long without fluid Quote
Euro Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 why do you want to delete the power steering? Quote
Dark Ride Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I think the only GM passenger car to come with manual steering in 1991 was the Cavalier....And that rack and pinion won't fit. I Know that the Geo Tracker didn't have PS either. Although you honestly couldn't tell by driving it. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Driving a W-body without power steering isn't fun. I did it for nearly a year with the Grand Prix. Then, I had to do it for a week with the Cutlass after I had a PS line blow. Driving a manual W-body with no PS should be an Olympic challenge. Quote

The power steering has been out on this one for a while, I just recently replaced the pump, and the friggin pully shattered a day afterwards. Guess I should have replaced it with a new one anyways, it appeared to have a micro crack in it when I examined it. Deleting the PS was more of a curiousity than following through with it. I don't plan to keep this girl much longer, she has many hiccups. I recently had a 93 sunbird 3.1 mated to a 5. Would lke to get another or a z24 vert, along those lines, perhaps boosted. Quote

zx21 Posted January 19, 2007 Author Report Posted January 19, 2007 On the plus side it's like working out while driving. Quote
Psych0matt Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I had a hard time on a grand am without a PS pump. Oh, and what kind of Z vert did you used to have? I want another Phaze I like my old one Quote
GIANT MOTH Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Plastic pulleys? micro cracks? I understand all of this now. This crap needs to be added to the list of whining power steering pumps. Cheer up feller. Don't cry. Quote
compu_85 Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 Something the VW guys do when their rack starts to leak is take the lines off the pump, remove the pump, and connect both lines from the rack to the reservoir. That keeps fluid in the rack, and it can move around as you turn, but it's not under pressure. Not sure if that's possible on your car, but if everything is junk anyway it couldn't hurt to try eh? -Jason Quote
