I'm running a colder t-stat, 180* rather than the stock 195*. Runs quite a bit cooler and better IMO.

I was considering going to a 165*, but in my climate that would suck in the winter.

I got mine at Canadian Tire, but I imagine you can get them at just about any automotive parts store. Canadian Tire had a booklet giving the part number for all three temperature t-stats that fit the engine, so that made it easy. I had it installed when I had my head and LIM gaskets done about 6 months ago.

180* would be as low as I would go, as once you start getting lower, you chance your engine heating up then cooling down too drastically and could cause damage, unless you had your computer tuned. at least this is what Ive heard. 180* should be good though :thumb:

It doesnt matter if the computer is tuned or not. The actual temperature difference is not good for the motor. Especially the block and the cynlinder walls.

Just run the stock 195* thermostat. Your not going to gain anything by putting in a lower thermostat. Thats why there are dual eletric fans that are computer controlled to not let the temp get above 227* in which that is still not that hot.

Ive always ran a 180 tstat in everything ive driven and never had a problem, I just figured Id continue that trend. I know in the 3800's the benefits are a cut down in KR.

a 180 stat would be fine. as for the tranny, im pretty sure there's a shift kit out there for you, i just cant remember where. too bad the 4t65e's dont fit, there's plenty of those.

Yea I found the B&M shift kit, I also know that High stall TC's for the 65 work in the 60 trannies but Im not sure if they'll work in early 60 trannies. Im just wondering if there are any parts out there to "beef" these trannies up to take more abuse.
