Stevo
I am on a quest to get the 88' SL online. We put a new battery in it and some gas and she cranks but wont start. Some clicks are heard from what I take maybe a starter issue which after 4-5 start tries (I keep yellin' at my bro to stop giving it gas) the car then wont even crank. We give it a rest and then it will crank again. The downpipe blew off the cat (it looks like maybe the cat is full or blocked) but the pipe is still somewhat attached to the cat. Is the starter the issue or is it a case of a blocked exaust? The damn car started up before and I dont understand why it's being a pain in the ass now. FordBoy
IF it stops cranking i would take of the starter and have it tested. How did the cat blow off the downpipe? During cranks just a boom and it was off or what? BUt if there is a opening for exaust to keep frowing out of that wont do it if starter is checked out no prob there check the cat then/the other way around thats up to you. Stevo
I was detaching the starter. Got the plastic cover underneath off by removing the 3 bolts. I unbolted this long bolt from the rear of the starter (assuming that is a starter bolt. I removed the nut to the bracket that goes from the starter to the AC unit. I cannot see a second bolt that 3 books say is there. Is the 2.8L starter bolted on in any unusual way? I may have to take some pics. edit. Nevermind ... the stupid diagram showing the alternator for the 2.8 3.1 and 3100 was wrong in not showing the correct type of bolt. Starter is fubar since I can turn the cog in one direction and there is some side to side play. A new one is tight with no play. It's also the original starter too. lol. intern8tion9l
when it stops cranking, get a long extension or something and bang on the starter while your brother keeps trying to crank it. if it starts while doing this, you know its the starter
Stevo
Yeah the starter is toasted. I think it was getting bound up because the cog inside is quite loose. Not only that but the teeth are quite worn. I also noticed that with the top dogbones disconnected... the motor really flops around which used to be quite difficult to move when putting the back plugs in so the bottom mounts need to be replaced. THE BEAST SHALL RISE AGAIN!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!....
Stevo
Hmmm ... I was trying to install the new starter today. I have the 3 terminals that go to the main bolt on the solenoid. I marked the frontal wire (purple) on the small terminal of the solenoid and I cannot find the second wire that goes to the last terminal. Anyone know what that wire went to? I am stumped. I looked at all the wiring and its pretty solid. I cant see any reason for 1 wire to break off and blow away when it's neighbors are in great shape. I do remember pushing wires out of the way to slide the starter out and it was dark by the time that happened. Any ideas? Where can I trackback? slick
Feel around. There is a harness that runs underneath near there. I bet it just got tucked away and your not seeing it.
