GutlessSupreme Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 So the STE motor's been sitting in the garage for a few months w/ no topend on it, just some plastic sheeting over the top. I take a look at it yesterday and boom.. cylinder 1 is 1/4 covered in surface rust. Am I going to have to remove the piston and rehone it? Quote
White93z34 Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 on a brand new engine I'm not sure what you can get away with since the rings aren't seated yet. however on a park avenue i did head gaskets on it was set out side with no rear head on while we were waiting for a new gasket set, and in that time it got rust in the cylinder walls, we used wd-40 on a paper towel to clean as much of it up as we could, there was a little bit left by the time we put the head on, and i figure after a few starts it will be 100% gone. now after you clean up the cylinder i'd coat it in a thin coat of grease to prevent if from happening again. Euro Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 i like chris's idea. we did something like that on my friend's 3.1 to get rid of some surface rust on the heads Quote
gp90se Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 The seafoam lube and PB blaster work excellent for removing light rust I'm with Chris, light oil everything after its clean, fogging oil (if you can find it) is the best for it. Quote
Addicted To Boost Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 x2 on using lube on it. Worst case scenario: if that doesn't work, THEN u can take it apart. Quote
slick Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Warning, there might be a bit of smoke after the initial startup! Quote
