19Cutlass94
For the struts on the FFP coilovers, is the KYB's the only strut that you can use? I know it says on their website that the KYB GR-2's are required, but if I can use different struts, not only would it save me ALOT money, it just might ride better as well. CSI_MuNkY
What were you thinking of using? I know when I looked in to it, monroes were actually going to cost me MORE than the KYBs... I don't see why any strut wouldn't work, you have to modify the housing on the KYB units anyways. Jamie
19Cutlass94
Well with my discount, I can get struts for $22. NAPA sena-tracs.
CSI_MuNkY
Well with my discount, I can get struts for $22. NAPA sena-tracs. That makes sense... Measure up the strut body diameter of the struts you are considering. I think if you read through the DIY coil over thread there is a measurement of the sleeves in there... if not then I know the measurement of the strut body for the KYB is in there somewhere Jamie
19Cutlass94
Well if you think about it, they would almost have to fit. If the KYB-GR2's fit all the way around in these cars, and so do the sensa-tracs, there should be no reason why they shouldnt fit, right? I mean Ive heard people complain once they put the FFP's in, the back is pretty harsh. I mean Im sure the KYB's dont help the situation much, so this might be an idea for a "softer" FFP kit if you can get away with using a softer strut
CSI_MuNkY
Like mentioned in the DIY coil over thread, you could also go to a softer spring, someone posted springs that were rated at 200lb spring rate, if you want a softer ride you could drop down to a 150 or so, that would give you a softer ride as well. But I agree, I don't see why the struts from another manufacturer shouldn't work... they will probably require the same modification that the FFPs do. Jamie i did no such modification, i couldn't understand why one had to do that grinding.....
blackbombshell95
Have you tried to contact Michael from FFP to see what he knows about other shocks fitting? I know another member has been trying to contact him for a few weeks and no luck
19Cutlass94
No, I havent tried to contact him yet. I mean even if he could build it with other struts, it would still cost more for him to do it. I mean I sure hope I can contact him when Im going to order this stuff or else Im screwed because I dont want a rear mono-leaf to lower the ass end. blackbombshell95
Good luck. Try to get ahold of him now if you can.
97loudcut
I have been in contact with Michael for the past couple weeks about the rear coilovers. He assured me that the orders are not taking the "4 months to ship" that people were claiming. He said if you order a set, expect them to be shipped in 4 to 6 weeks. I just ordered the coilovers and struts today. I basically want them to come assembled to my house and slap them on. I could care less about ride quality especially since I like the feeling of stiff/sporty suspension.
19Cutlass94
I mean I dont wanna have it sooo stiff that it just kills me and the car ya know. I dont mind the kinda ride where its very firm. But if it is a little too hard, this would/could be something I could do to soften it up a little bit. I e-mailed Michael yesturday so hopefully Ill have these things ordered this week. And like you Matt, Im just going to have him build mine so I just have to bolt them on. TurboSedan
when i bought my TDC coilovers i bought them without the KYB struts because i wanted to save money and figured i could just reuse my original struts which were still good at the time. however, i quickly found out there was NO WAY the coilover sleeves would fit over the OEM strut body (and like i've mentioned before, FFP probably uses the same AFCO sleeves TDC did). the OEM strut body is just too big for the sleeves. i'm not sure about Monroe Sensatracs or any other struts....you'd just have to measure and check. so.....i'd say KYBs could very well be your only strut option for coilovers. 19Cutlass94
Well for now, the KYB's will have to do. Although Im sure when they wear out, Ill be looking into this more. Although well see since I dont exactly want to have the sleeves honed out just to fit a cheaper strut. But I bet your probably right that they wont fit. 97loudcut
Im guessing your car will wear out before a new set of KYB's will.
19Cutlass94
Then that means yours will be in the jy half way parted out.

Although well see since I dont exactly want to have the sleeves honed out just to fit a cheaper strut. But I bet your probably right that they wont fit. yeah there was no way the sleeves could have been honed out enough to fit my OEM struts - they were quite a bit bigger in diameter. the sleeves would have been paper thin after honing them out enough to slide over the OEM strut body. fwiw my KYBs lasted 5 years & ~70,000 miles before one completely blew out. the other one still seems fine. 19Cutlass94
yeah if you took that much material out of the sleeves, Im sure that they would not be very strong at all. I mean if the KYB's last 5yrs each, I think thats well worth the what $50 for each strut?

AWeb80
Jay, KYB's are not a stiff ride.... i am pleased w/ them. i've got the 250# springs and the KYB combo is great.... smooth and responsive, but stiff when they need to be in corners. 19Cutlass94
Now that 250# is what comes on the FFP co's right?

When q-ball was strut shopping he found out that he could get a life time warrenty on the KYBs, just like you can on the monroes. Of course I guess if you end up grinding them down at all for the sleeves you will void the warrenty, but its something to look in to.
