TheGreenMachine
Okay guys so it all started with me moving my battery to the trunk. I did it, it started up and i thought i would be good to go but of course no. I had the battery tested it was bad so i go to the store buy a new one and i still have the same problem. I turn on the car it runs for a minute or two then it dies out. Right before it dies it makes a sound like i have a fat cam in there and also a wierd sucking sound coming from my intake it gets reall loud. So i did what i did last time this happened the idle relearn process. the problem is that my car wont run long enough for the computer to learn it. step 3 is let engine run for 5 minutes my wont stay on that long. So if you could please help me out that would be great thanks guys! -Andrew
19Cutlass94
I would take a look at the IAC. Its gets very dirty with carbon, and after a while it gets stuck. And the sound that your hearing could be a pretty big vaccum leak. When you were doing the idle re-learn, you did have it in gear, foot on brake etc etc right? CSI_MuNkY
Check your Aux battery post. Mine has had to be cleaned twice in the year that I have owned my car. Not too long ago I went through the same crap you are now, idle relearn didn't do anything so I got a new IAC and the problem persisted. I had the battery tested and Canadian tire said it was fine, so I put it back in the car and took it to my fathers mechanic, he checked the Aux post first, then the battery. When he plugged the battery in to be charged it started smoking like mad. I still have the problem if the car is cold and I start it up and let it sit for a few minutes, but reving it up to about 3k settles it down again. Idle re-learn has done nothing for the problem this time either. When I went to the local GM dealer about my problem they said it was either my EGR or the IAC, they were wrong on both counts though... check you aux post and maybe give your EGR a cleaning... Nick1234
see i had my battery disconnected for about a half hour one time, and ever since then it will idle shitty at times. Iac doesn't go bad in 30 minutes. Everytime i hit the gas quick, or go from reverse to drive it will die out. Point being i wonder if it isn't an electrical issue. weak current? Bad grounds? CSI_MuNkY
Point being i wonder if it isn't an electrical issue. weak current? Bad grounds? Thats why I say the Aux post should be the first check... if he just moved the battery something could be fowled up on the Aux terminal, and I know from experience that if that thing gets buggered up it causes some pain in the ass problems... The first time I needed that thing cleaned it was becaus ethe car was randomly stalling in traffic and idling like crap in the driveway. 1990lumina
so what exactly do i have to do to service the battery post im about ready to just bring the thing to the dealer i need my car Clean up the terminal and cables on the post..and make sure it's super tight..but don't break the plastic thing that mounts to the strut tower
skiiirt
You do not need to do the idle relearn as per the forum. According to 3 GM techs. If you can keep the engine running, take it for a drive on a highway for 20 mins. Same effect
CSI_MuNkY
so what exactly do i have to do to service the battery post im about ready to just bring the thing to the dealer i need my car like 1990lumina says clean it up. I generally take all the wires off it, clean it up with a wire brush and reassemble it... You do not need to do the idle relearn as per the forum. According to 3 GM techs. If you can keep the engine running, take it for a drive on a highway for 20 mins. Same effect I don't see how that would help... idle and driving at highway speeds are considerably different. Not saying it won't work, I just don't see how. That said if the idle re-learn isn't working that likely won't either, I drove mine on the highway when the re-learn did nothing, driving on the highway did nothing either Jamie
skiiirt
I don't see how that would help.. The same way starting your car, turning it off and then starting it again helps it. I'm not arguing with ya, just stating what I was told at 3 different dealerships. I personally do it the way thats recommended on the forums, just stating an alternate means of doing a idle relearn. Besides, I doubt it's the idle relearn thats causing this problem. Perhaps a bad ECM?
z34Phoenix
what engine are we talking about? that vac leak sound... is it only when it cuts out?
TheGreenMachine
its a 3100 I would take it out to the highway but as soon as i stop for more than a minute it dies and the vac leak sound only happens when the engine dies out
rockfangd
im almost willing to bet you have a vacumn leak. check on the driver rear of the engine and there will be a thicker vacumn line that wraps around to the side, the hole that it goes is into on the rear if the intake . the hose likes to crack and when it does you end up with a bad vacumn leak thats hard to detect. try starting it and spraying a little carb cleaner around the vacumn lines and see if it revves at a spot. also SES yes or no
Addicted To Boost
You could also use starting fluid- more effective, but be sure to NOT use a lot- it IS flammable!
