PS pump whining.

Looks liek I need a new power steering pump it whines from roughly 2,000 rpm to 3,000 rpm. It sounds like my car is supercharged. I did the worst thing possible to it and added WD-40 to the pulley. Fuck sakes, last thing I needed before Christmas.

I wouldn't think a PS pulley would whine a certain RPM, I would guess something more like an alternator.

Also, why would you spray WD40 on it?

I sprayed WD-40 on the pulley like where the bearings and shit are. You can only really hear it from 2-3,000rpm. It is for sure the PS pump I put my ear right up to it, although, I guess I could get underneath the car tomorrow and see if I can for sure eliminate the alternator as the culprit.

WD-40 sucks as a lubricant :leaving:

I'm a bike technicain, have been for about 8 months... I can't tell you how many chains I have had to replace this year because ppl thought they could lube their chains with WD-40... It works as an ok lube between to metals rubbing back and forth, but because of its content it doesn't last long at all. I have actually found that it works as a better degreaser than a lubricant. I've sprayed the stuff on bearings and watched the greese just liquify and drip away.

More on topic, I know MY issue is the power steering pump, the whine gets worse when I turn the wheel, and even worse if when the cars not moving so much...

I have the same prob. But the whinning is coming from the driver side ONL.Y. Like by the tranny. But i dont know it doesnt seem to be affecting the car in the yr its been whinning. :dunno:

I thought it was my tranny, but it's coming from the wrong side, and it whines under a free load from 2-3,000rpm.

ehh, my mechanic said i had to replace mine right away, but instead I topped it off (it was low) and its been fine. I know eventually it'll go out, but it's been 6 months or so and it hasnt gotten any worse. whats weird is that it didnt start whining until after it sat and then had the new engine installed :dunno:

mines been whining for probably the better part of a year at least. It only whines at low rpms(under 3k) and only when the car is cold, and/or its cold outside. Its never a problem in 3 out ofthe 4 seasons.

weird... mine got worse after a mechanic took the pump off the engine to do a complete gasket swap...

Then I blew a power steering line and took it to a shop to get it replaced, the pump got a bit better, or so I thought, now that its colder out, its getting worse and worse as the temp drops...

place the end of a long screwdriver on the pump housing (while running) put the other end of the screwdriver (handle) to your ear. You should hear the whine more clearly if that's the problem.

I had a leak from the rack and pump noises in my Saturn a while back. I got some Valvoline PS fluid for cars over 75,000 miles (dark red bottle) that supposedly helps the seals, noise etc. Worked like a charm. That was at least 15,000 miles/2 years ago, and its still fine.

Here's what I did on My Z34, take a bulb syringe or a small turkey baster, draw a bunch of your old fluid out, add a bottle of LubeGuard PS additive, then raise the front of the car, with it off, turn wheels from stop to stop 20 times, then start car and hold at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes. This is the factory bleeding procedure. my pump is dead quiet. You'll be surprised just how much air bubbles will show up in the fluid after turning the wheels back and forth.

The LubeGuard additive can be found at NAPA
