dsgrntld187
Alright, this isn't really important info for powertrain section, but my buddy says that the supercharger won't run unless you use premium, that theres a sensor that detects premium fuel. I say its always running no matter what, and unless its got a clutch of some sort like Mad Max, its always on.
Robby1870
He is wrong. The supercharger is belt driven. Thus, when the engine turns, the supercharger does.
dsgrntld187
Just to clarify: The L67 does not have any form of blow off valve or pressure release, correct?
slick
Your friend is an idiot. BTW, the Mercedes Kompressor's that are supercharged do infact have an off/on type switch. Pretty cool set-up, I was actually looking at one of those SC's at one time.
dsgrntld187
Also: What happens when premium is not used? I assume the knock sensor retards timing, correct?
Cam'ron
the premium "recommendation" for a s/c'd engine is simply for the air/fuel mixture but i don't see how it is required for normal everyday driving
CSI_MuNkY
the only problem your going to have NOT running premium, I think, is a KR (knock retard) issue... other than that... like robby1870 said... its belt driven, lol tell your buddy he needs to lay off the crack, lol Jamie
dsgrntld187
the only problem your going to have NOT running premium, I think, is a KR (knock retard) issue... Can I get confirmation that this is the only thing the L67 will do if premium is not used

Can I get confirmation that this is the only thing the L67 will do if premium is not used pretty much...KR will retard the timing though, and could possibly chip a piston...as long as you're not beating on the car though, i doubt its gonna destroy it...i bet 98% of people that own GTP's & GS's don't use premium...hell, the dealer put 87 in mine when i was test driving it...freakin idiots... GP1138
the dealer put 87 in mine when i was test driving it...freakin idiots... same here! I was like WTF!? Dealers are cheap... anytime I'm told to put gas in a turbo'd/supercharged car, they say "put midgrade in it"... I usually ignore it because I want the person's car to run right, but I also usually only ignore what they say if someone's buying it new... if it's just going to be sitting on the lot, I'll put midgrade in it. 99RegalGS
Just to clarify: The L67 does not have any form of blow off valve or pressure release, correct? There is a valve on the s/c to release pressure. But fuel type isn't a factor in how it operates. There isn't even a sensor in the car to say what kind of gas you have in it. The only cars I know that have a fuel type sensor are the flex fuel cars...
Euro
yeah, you'll just seem to know when the car has anything less than 93 in it when it starts running worse. kinda like when you put diesel in a Durango like my friend did to her boyfriend's old truck
digitaloutsider
If he's modified and tries to run 87, he's going to chip a piston. And he's going to be sorry for being a cheap asshole. The car is DESIGNED to run premium. RUN IT.
dsgrntld187
He doesn't have an L67, I do, but he tried to tell me basically there was no way the supercharger could keep running if it was running 87, and that there was some sort of safety beyond the knock sensor

White93z34
on a stock one, you can get away with running it. but once you add mods its a MUST.
19Cutlass94
Thats basically the case for any non-N/A engine. Running low octane on a blown engine is not good. As my neighbor found out after cracking a couple pistons...
Miko K
In the PCM itself there is two separate "main spark advance" tables- high and low octane. When the PCM detects too much KR it simply sends you to the low octane table until you get pass a KR threshold to get back to the high octane table. In the "Torque management" window there is a sub-window for "supercharger torque management" that controls the boost if you are beating on the car and KR doesn't help. Hope this helps. z34Phoenix
yeah i have heard some people retune for mid grade on this engine. and when they go to the track they switch to premium. but yeah the highest grade is deff worth it. normally top fuel is only $.2 more! so even at 16 gal... thats $3 ? is that worth replacing an engine? esp after spending $$$ on mods.... to only destroy it. yeah but the SC can not turn off. it does have a Boost Bypass Valve. BBV but that is just for low RPM. basicly at low throtle it acts like a NA car. and then at higher throtle it opens and runs on boost
