chadz34
I really want to get to the bottom of my randomly occuring no start problem. I'm real pissed because no one can do anything about it until it does it when it's to be serviced. So, that being said, whenever it goes up there, it always starts. I want to rule out some things and see if we can narrow this down. I have new plugs, wires, head gaskets, intake gaskets, fuel filter, air filter, vacuum lines and timing belt. Probably more. It feels like when it doesn't start it may be flooded, it tries so hard to start, but it can't. I can hear my fuel pump kick on, so it's no the pump right? I am real stumped and I don't know what to do. There's are no codes either. I also just recently unplugged my EGR to see if it made any difference. None whatsoever and with it unplugged it's not throwing a code either. Let's see if we can come up with somethign here guys....thanks! PCGUY112887
Could try to crank a few times, and if it doesn't start run over and pull out a plug and see if it's wet. If it is, means fuel is working. While the plug it out stick it on the wire and hold it in the air and have someone crank the car, see if your getting a good spark. I think I've heard of someone saying that a bad CPS (Crank Position Sensor) could cause this problem but someone needs to ensure me on that answer. I had thought of that as well, it could be a crank sensor, but as far as I know, there are two on the 96' DOHC. One I can, and one I can't get too, and I'll bet that it'd be the one I can't get to. BTW, wouldn't a cranks sensor throw a code?
97CuttySupSL
mine does this every one in awhile...new plugs and wires..new headgaskets..new injectors..still have the problem.so i dont kno

Oh well, I know for a FACT it can be fixed, I mean there owuld have been a recall or something if it happened when new. If I bought a new car and it did that I'd take the damned thing back. slick
So when your trying to start it, it DOES crank, but DOES NOT start, right?

chadz34
So when your trying to start it, it DOES crank, but DOES NOT start, right? Correct, it DOES crank, and try to start, but can't. ANd, it's at random times, doesn't happen all the time, which is the part that has me stumped. rockfangd
this may sound a little weird but chck your auxillary post and check and use dielectric grease on the relays in both boxes

slick
It's most likely in the ignition(ICM or coil packs) or one of the crank sensors.

mfewtrail
Is the problem really "randomly occuring" or can you narrow it down to certain conditions(first startup after a few hours, restarting the car warm, etc.?) Any fuel smell present when the car doesn't want to start? Any other driveability concerns besides the hardstarting/no-starting?
gimper
Yea, most of those things aren't really random. Like when its damp outside it doesn't start, when its under X deg it doesn't start etc.. mfewtrail is very right -- try to keep a track the conditions when it happens. It's very seldom its totally random like you know a lose cable which can be more or less random. Out of experience most of this is due to cold or moist, people tend to do the obvious things such as a sensor, ign wires, coils but not more. The dis and coils are prime cadidates for moist/cold problems. Likewise is connectors, trace the cables and check the connections for possible bad contacts or damaged seals. 97CuttySupSL
naw man its really random.....it could a hundred out and it wont start,it could be -10 and no start..it could have jus got donw snowing no start,it could be a regualr old 70 out and no ..starts .its random

Any fuel smell present when the car doesn't want to start? Any other driveability concerns besides the hardstarting/no-starting? It gets fuel during the no start situation. It seems to me, from what he was telling me over MSN, that something is getting heatsoaked. It will only have this no start situation when the car has been driven recently(usually within the past 30 minutes). It starts fine when it's cold, and starts fine once the vehicle has cooled down. The vehicle DOES crank but WILL NOT start. He sent me a video last night, and you can here it put put during this, so it's really trying to start. Thats why I say no spark. Anyways, he will be getting a few jy icm's in the mail hopefully soon to test out, instead of shelling out whatever the crazy canadian amount for an ICM. PCGUY112887
Is there any way to test an ICM? That's the plastic plate thingy under the coilpacks, correct?
chadz34
Is there any way to test an ICM? That's the plastic plate thingy under the coilpacks, correct? Correct, it is underneath the coil packs. I would like to thank Slick, he has been a huge help and talked to me for so long trying to help me fix my problem, now I just need to talk with Tony and get some ICM's to test out. The ICM you can't really test.
